Tuolumne meadows shuttle question
June 17, 2010 05:55AM
I have a bit of a problem

I plan on hiking to the valley with my girlfriend from Sunrise Lakes on the 26-28 of this month, and I'm not sure how I'm going to get back to Sunrise my car

The YARTS Bus doesn't run during the week until 7/1

The Tuolumne meadows shuttle bus hasn't started running yet, and they don't have a scheduled start day yet

Worst case we'll spend the 28th at the backpackers camp in the valley, and hike Yosemite Falls to Porcupine Creek trailhead on 6/29-30, and hitch back to the car.

Anybody have any thoughts on rideshares, hitchhiking, the shuttle bus, or alternative hikes from the valley to Tioga road

Thanks

There is one. Check this site and call the number to see if it's running already (schedule says June 12 but you'll want to confirm): http://www.yosemitepark.com/activities_guidedbustours_tuolumnemeadows.aspx

Note the departure time, though (8am-ish). If you're leaving your car at Sunrise, might not be the best option. Better if you're leaving your car in the valley and hiking back down to your car.

You can also take YARTS. They depart the Valley about 5pm and stop on demand, so might be better if you're leaving your car at Sunrise. Cgeck out their schedule: http://www.yarts.com/schedules.html

Does Yarts really stop on demand at other that predetermined stops or does this depend on the driver?

According to their policy they'll make unscheduled stops as long as it is on the same side of the road as the direction of travel and the driver can get get the bus completely off the road etc. But it is in the driver's discretion if safe to do so.

Thanks, but the hikers bus schedule is from 2009

The YARTS schedule says weekends only until July

I called the Delaware North Yosemite main number (209-372-4386). After waiting maybe a minute, I got to an operator, who indicated that the TM Hikers Shuttle is targeted to start running as soon as Tuolumne Meadows Lodge opens. The target date is supposedly July 2, although he indicated that they might start it earlier. I'd say call before arriving and maybe even check at one of the tour desks while you're here to see if the status changes.
