Tuolumne Meadows one huge lake?
June 20, 2010 12:51PM
I hear Tuolumne Meadows is one huge lake. I assume that means with mosquitoes abundant, seeking blood. Has the snow really melted yet?
So instead of crunch crunch, it is squish squish?

Thanks!

Was up yesterday and the meadows looked about normal. The water has gone down since a week ago when I was last up there and it indeed was Tuolumne Lake.

Suspect overnight temperatures are stll killing some mosquitoes moving up canyon from lower elevations. Air sumping from higher elevation where nightime convection cooling off the large snowfields added to radiation cooling during clear calm nights is likely causing significant pooling in the meadows thus keeping numbers in check. But that will soon change as ground temps rise.

As of yesterday (Saturday) afternoon, the river was pretty much confined to its banks as it traversed Tuolumne Meadows. There were a couple spots where it was "extrawide" as it spilled out into adjacent low areas, but the meadows are basically unswamped.
