The thousands of mine shafts that pockmark the Sierra Nevada and testify to California's Gold Rush riches have also left a legacy of toxic contamination in some of the state's popular recreation areas, according to a new study.

"pose significant threats to public safety" I seriously doubt that anyone has ever been harmed by this.

I'd really need to see more about their methodology and extrapolations on their sample data before I could consider this even remotely seriously.

Next I expect to see an article that talks of an explosion long ago that has left a legacy of toxic radiation. The radiation is everywhere and poses a significant threat to public safety.
