Re: Vintage Yosemite Paintings

I was trying to figure out who might be glad to know this, and wound up here.

I love old (1800's) Yosemite paintings. There is something magical about them. Often they include people dressed as they did at the time. Seeing how it was before tourism, too is...well, it just brings me back, like I can visit it before it became so well known.

I've seen old paintings here and there and always wanted one (at least a print), and finally decided to look online. Ordered one (Albert Bierstadt - Half Dome c 1875. Haven't gotten it yet, but it is beautiful.

Beautiful image, but Half Dome looks strange in that painting.

You should go check out the exhibit in the Museum in the valley.
They have some old paintings and other items.

It's been awhile since I was in the museum. I'll go there and see if there's one I want to try to get a replica of. Thanks for the tip!

That's one of the things I like about it. Many old paintings look a little "off". Not exactly as it should, but recognizable.

Similar works can be found at the Stanford Museum. Not many, but a few.

(If you are interested in the history of the transcontinental railroad, check out the rail spikes while you
are there.)
