I love it!

I found the Happy Rock in my avatar a couple of years ago along the JMT near the Lyell Fork. When we were there earlier this month, we went back and gave him back his eyes.

We also found a Grumpy Rock at the "beach" along the Tuolumne River hike (west side):

Nope. That one was above Siesta Lake.

Did the JMT from Cathedral Lakes to Happy Isles on 8/1/10 - 8/4/10. Like any time spent in Yosemite, it was lots of fun.

While on the trail I spotted a rare chickon-phoenix hybrid. I barely had time to snap his picture while he turned himself into this burnt tree.

Also saw this whale rock breaching just feet from the trail.

There's been a little talk of Elephant Rock... was able to stop on the
road and get a click click of it Friday.

Pointed it out to the wife last time we both drove to the valley to do Indian Canyon.
I was surprised she said something to the effect of "that is really cool".
Usually she is ho hum on my exuberance.

I love all of these. I've been pretty head-down with my so-called "real life" and missing the rocks and snow. Time to figure out how to make a trip back to both happen. Soon.

The shark is near this 'world's smallest arch' , about a one foot opening.

I rolled out my sleeping bag next to the arch. It was on a hike this summer during the Persiads. I started from Tenaya Lake and went over Clouds Rest and camped on the eastern Quarter Dome. The little arch is out near the point, and the shark is just out of the trees toward the western side of the QD. Awesome spot for watching the stars. The spring near the bottom of the nearby switchbacks was flowing nicely. Made an early morning Half Dome climb from there with pre-dawn bushwhacking. I'm enjoying these rock creatures.

I. . . snip . . . The spring near the bottom of the nearby switchbacks was flowing nicely. . . . snip . . ..

Can you describe which spring and where you're referring to?

The spring on the map indicated at the end of a spur trail off the main HD trail??
Or the seep thats just off the HD trail ( visible from the trail if you know where to look ) behind a big log down slope from the spring?
Or is there another spring in the area?

qumqats, Nope, not the springs on the HD trail. Coming down from Clouds Rest and just below the pinnacles is a set of twelve switchbacks and my old map (Topo Map of Yosemite Valley by Wilderness Press) shows springs by the 8th and 12th switchbacks coming down. The lower one has a scooped out little pool under the bank you can dip from. Cold and sweet.

Chick-on, nice catch of the shark in the corner of your pic.

Not a rock smiley face, but I think this is harder to recreate or find... Goatie thought this was pretty cool and I told him I would post this. Taken just below Sharkie, yesterday, as the clouds swept on by. Within 5 mins the whole thing changed so I attribute luck to get this.

OK--I'll play a bit. But I'll have to do it with links to my photos in Picasa if that's OK...

Here's one that looks like a boar...taken in the Emigrant Wilderness around Bucks Lakes: http://picasaweb.google.com/balzaccom/EmigrantWilderness08#5246037613739565762

and here a giant turtle in Karls Lake on the same trip: http://picasaweb.google.com/balzaccom/EmigrantWilderness08#5246038050205295858

And a smiling turtle head in Desolation Wilderness near Lyon's Lake: http://picasaweb.google.com/balzaccom/DesolationWilderness08#5236677959000353474

And a crazy naked tree....ok, I turned this one upside down, but still: http://picasaweb.google.com/balzaccom/EmigrantWilderness08#5246039275736623218
