LIke I posted when this came up on the Sierra Club facebook:

I'm sure she and Gayle aren't going to be doing any hard-core camping. But her glamping will certainly bring more positive attention to the value of being in nature and protecting these amazing natural places for generations to come. I'm not a fan of spending much time with the hordes on the valley floor, but when we visit Yosemite with our friends and family who have mobility issues, it's our only option. Not everyone can or wants to hike into wild and camp-camp. For many people, being in a campsite with lots of people is the only way they'll dare to visit. But even they go home with an undying love of their version of the out-of-doors experience. And they too feel a sense of ownership of Yosemite. Which is a good thing, since they are part of the 300 million people who own a piece of it.

And then, when bills and elections come up that impact how we treat nature and fund these parks, they are more likely to act in a way that will protect it.

Well, at least, that's how it happens in the perfect world inside my head. smiling smiley

Well said...

and I'm not a fan of Oprah.... just thought some out there would like to know..

Wifey was on a kick of watching her after she got home from work...
I'd get home ... she her.. and go "NOOOOprah!"
Drove me nuts...

I look at this in much the same manner as George W visiting Moro Rock.
Uh huh... sure George... and no, we should not be putting cattle in there
or cutting all those trees down...
Well... I guess at least the trees are still standing..

That would be why she staged a "surprise" visit to the REI in Fresno.

If it's a surprise, setting up the tent she rented outside four days in advance and putting up traffic cones, not really so much a way of keeping the secret....

Yeah, still not watching Oprah... I don't want to be tempted to throw things at my tv. It's bad enough Dr Phil is her fault.

She didn't do any hard core camping. She and her girlfriend stayed in a tent trailer that she towed. She also had Shelton escort her around the place along with a retinue of LE.

Awesome! I'll be watching this Friday and Monday. Thanks for the heads up!

Hey, a tent trailer is at least more hard core than staying at the Ahwahnee, which she could easily afford to have booked every room.

I heard that she did have a room reserved at Ahwahnee.... I really cannot see Oprah taking a shower at Curry

just watched it, it was pretty funny actually... wed is another episode of her in Yosemite.

We just watched it too. Enjoyed it. GW laughed quite a bit..
Loved the overhead shots of the valley and of them driving in the park.
Hope they have more next Wed. in part 2.

Myself, way out in the backcountry, only have seen a few african americans.
Remember two instances vividly. Young kid was hiking up towards
Sunrise Lakes... having a hard time... we were coming down... me hopping
down the steps using my hiking poles. We said hi and he asked if those
there sticks helped at all. smiling smiley
Other time was at Crescent Lake. Two older gentleman were with a young
white kid who they said was in the boy scouts. The kid was taking them
backpacking. They were just having a great time and said they were so
looking forward to coming back again and again... how beautiful it was, etc.
I thought that was pretty cool.
I'm mentioning this on account she visited in the hopes that doing so would
encourage more african americans to visit the parks.

It's hilarious. I thought I was a glamper that brought everything but the kitchen sink, but ... truffle oil?! Sea bass?

Also, I really wanted them to get a bear-talk from a ranger. They totally went to bed with way too much food and gear sitting out on their picnic tables.

When car camping, why not?

Sea bass?

Wouldn't do that. Fish taste fishy.
