In November 2007, a man died after climbing Cathedral Peak in Yosemite with his partner. They expected to return the same day but were trapped on the descent when it began to snow, and one climber succumbed to hypothermia. In June 2008, a man died on Rainier after a freak blizzard caught three unsuspecting hikers in a storm that dropped 2 feet of snow. They had only left Camp Muir on a day hike. Although two of the three were experienced climbers and had previously reached the summit of Rainier. However, they didn’t have the 10 essentials, including emergency shelter, and the fallen hiker gave his life by providing his body as insulation from the snow. They all suffered from hypothermia and frostbite.

A few comments....
I guess plenty of people would say you need to be mad to go snow camping.
As for the article it doesn't go into great depth about what it takes. I'll just
say it's not THAT different than any other time of the year. At the end of
the day you need to ensure you stay warm and dry, and have food.
How you accomplish those things is up to you...
The number one item for me is the "urination station".. once I get in my sleepy
bag I do NOT want to get out until the sun comes out.
The guy mentions that there are no arachnids in the winter... uh... I didn't know
there was an issue with arachnids ever in the sierra (it's sierra, not sierras btw).
Guess he meant mosquitos...
He also says "you begin to set up your temporary kitchen for hours of boiling water".
This one I don't understand. hours? How big is this group you are boiling water for?
Anyway, thanks for posting the link...

First time I snow camped I was nervous about the cold and perhaps overpacked. But one thing I can tell you that prepared my noggin' was this book, which since then, I go back to as a reference from time to time. It discusses much more than skiing- it is essential you go out "prepared".
It is an excellent investment: Allen & Mike's Really Cool Backcountry Ski Book, Revised and Even Better!: Traveling & Camping Skills for a Winter Environment, by O'Bannon and Clelland, ISBN-10: 0762745851.

In any case, snow camping is fun- but use some common sense and do not approach your destination when you know a big storm is heading your way, etc. Yosemite is beautiful throughout the year, and it is so cool to point out a spot later in the year that you camped on when it was covered many feet in white.
