Watching the Antiques Roadshow tonight, there was an Alfred Bierstadt painting that the appraiser could not completely identify. It appears to be a composite picture of American and European features with possibly the Alps in the background, but the presenters could not place the foreground. It looks to me like a certain valley in California, looking westward (perhaps trying to see Turlock?). Waddya think?

If that is El Cap then it is definitely a view towards the west. I don't think there is a range of that size between HD and Turlock though.

Those peaks were W of Turlock: the Patterson Pinnacles.

Rumor has it that they were destroyed by hydraulic mining and presently reside as landfill around what was once a much larger S.F. Bay:

(See the "Bay Fill and Depth Profile" section.)

All of the people responsible were banished to Nevada as punishment.

I think the artist just made up his own mountains.

I thought Bierstadt was famous for making places up? Though it looks like there are elements that resemble real life places...

We are grateful to Chick-on for the photo.
It is a fine addition to our dartboard and makes playing the game MUCH more fun.

Dear Chick-on,

Thanks again!
The picture is precisely what we need to practice for the Pin-The-Tail-On-The-Chickey 100-meter Crossbow Competition at the upcoming 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
