SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.— Doug Anderson jammed his rented Bob Cat snowblower into a bank of snow covering the Pope-Baldwin Bike Trail. The auger ground into the ice a few inches. He raised the arm, reversed and charged at the snow again. After 20 minutes, he cleared a few dozen feet of the trail. “You just inch along and this isn't even the bad part,” Anderson said. “If you keep it down, the tracks just spin. In some sections you have to hit it four or five times.”

Can't wait until they are ready though!

When is it usually dry and safe enough to start hiking on the trails?

Just check the cams. I am not sure what time of year usually, but it is starting to clear up.

Low elevation trails may be starting to clear up, high elevation trails are still covered in snow. Some of them won't be dry for 2 or 3 months or maybe even longer.

Did you have any particular trails in mind?

Around Memorial Day weekend, do you think we will need special gear for the hike to North Dome? Will it be passable?

Did several hikes in the valley this weekend. Trails were easily passable, with just a little bit of mud in some spots.

Which trails did you do? Were any trails closed while you were there? Planning to go this weekend.

Sorry for the delay, been a long week. We were down in the valley at Mirror Lake and then up on Old Big Oak Flat road trail. We walked around a bit at Hogdon Meadows and there was definitely snow and muddy areas.

Guess I'll take my chances tonight. Might be a wet weekend. Are the trails pretty safe when wet?

The trail are safe when wet but you may get mud on you boots or even water over the top and down inside. Stick to the worn trail though as that will cut down on degradation of the ground on either side of the trail. Be willing to get mud on your boots.

If you are going to be on icy trails then use something like Micro Spikes. Wet and watery no problem, icy can be risky.

Be careful when the trails are icy or slushy. You can slip. Pick up some spikes at the sports store if you are determined.
