That's not much more than a foot of snow on this side of that display.

Nice!...glad to see that you made it out to the point...and a couple of questions for the bird...
when will you have all of the trip pictures on picassa, and
I am heading up tomorrow for a few days of valley scrambles, including the diving board. Was checking out your 2009 pictures...I assume that I will need snowshoes to get to the diving board...what do you think?

a) Thanks for that Bench Marker! ... found it no problemo
(still sitting on your HD Spring/Pipe photo... smiling smiley I'll find it! )
b) I put of photos bunch here (never all) (take too many) :
https://picasaweb.google.com/yosemite.chick.on/OlmstedPt
I haven't annotated them yet though...
c) Diving Board... nice. Love that. Um... well, exhibit a:

All the south facing stuff will be snow free, guaranteed... i.e. nearly everything after Lost Lake.
The problem may be from wherever you jump off the trail in "LYV Area" to Lost Lake.
There's not a huge amount of snow but when it gets warm you can posthole up the ying yang.
Enough has probably melted by now that you can work your way around most.

It's not always a simple yes/no on account you can have 10 ft. of snow and walk away no problem
but when it gets to be much less and soft, it can be a nightmare. Just an example, we took the JMT/High Trail
to Merced Lake and we didn't put snowshoes on until coming down into Echo Valley... and then
on the way out we just decided to wear them out the entire way. Much of trail along the
Merced was snow free but we'd do the old on/off b/c the snow was terrible.

WWCD? Chick-on would leave the snowshoes in the car.

Have fun

If you look closely, you can barely identify where Chick-on was tunneling underneath the snow.
Unfortunately, he became misoriented and took a hard left directly into the rock outcropping (just past the flora).

O, and bummer couldn't get a view from Olmsted. O well. One of those deals where
if would have not gone the sky would have opened up and it would have been gorgeous out
after heading back down.
It was another trip where 30% chance o precip turned into 100% chance of snowing all day.
At least was smart enough to bring the tent. Would have been as frustrated as
The Old Dude opening a Child Proof container in my Bivy for that long.

Looks like slabs of snow are just waiting for a footstep to start falling.

I was in Tenaya Canyon in front of the sub-dome when it shed it's load of snow one year. At first we thought an earthquake was happening then all kinds of snow and huge rock shot over the cliff to the left, looking up, of the sub-dome. We were on a granite slab just below the avalanche and were scared to death, totally forgot to pull out the camera. Later I looked across the canyon from the Snow Creek trail and figured we weren't in any danger but man we were on a high all day from that.

That chick-on travels everywhere. If I didn't know any better, there are probably a dozen of them traveling with different "people."

Still pissed about this summit last year that I was left behind on:

Chick-on with all trappings takes a lot of pack space. "He" rarely flies anywhere. I've only seen "him" in the air once.

Rumor has it that Chick-on is of the male persuasion. Larry is male for sure.
