Millions of visitors traipse through the national parks, thanks in large part to a tall man with a long beard whose obsessive love for nature led to the protection of some of the most breathtaking scenery on the continent. His environmental advocacy helped to bring about the creation of Yosemite, Sequoia, Mount Rainier and Grand Canyon national parks, and is the topic of "A Walk in the Wild," the Muir exhibit opening at the Oakland Museum of California in August. The well preserved home in Martinez is definitely worth a visit!
Man, what a house! A total of 7 huge stone fireplaces, each one unique.
The surrounding grounds are nicely maintained with fruit trees and even a beekeeping setup.

It's rather interesting what has happened to the area since Muir lived there. The property is now right next to a multi-lane freeway. The whole area was developed when it used to be just acres of fruit orchards.

The NPS also acquired the Mt Wanda area, which Muir named after his daughter. The rangers there talk about Muir's gravesite somewhere in Martinez, but won't tell you how to get there.

Although not necessarily associated with Muir, the Martinez Adobe is on the grounds.

FYI, The Oakland Museum is the repository of the vast majority of the photographs of Dorothea Lange:
