The articles on the visit seem to emphasize that the Ahwhanee was Stanley Kubrick's inspiration for the set design in The Shining.

Apparently they're trying to stay in the Presidential Suite. I'm curious what the security is going to be like. Oprah's visit is going to be nothing compared to this. I'm also curious as to whether or not the paparazzi are going to have to get photography permits.

Older articles only mention that they're coming to Yosemite:

As usual, the Brits got it wrong.

Although some of the interior shots were based on the Ahwhanee, it was the Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood that was the basis for the Overlook Hotel of the movie:

Kubrick modelled parts of the interior of the film's hotel on the Ahwahnee, including its foyer, lounge and black and red lift doors.

I don't believe the WIkipedia article. I believe Stephen King stayed at the historic Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, and that's what inspired him to write "The Shining." But it wasn't filmed at the Stanley. Some shots for the 1980 film were shot at the Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood, Oregon and some shots were filmed in Yosemite, but the Stanley Hotel wasn't used. The 1997 TV miniseries did use the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park for filming locations though. So many people assume that the 1980 film was filmed at the Stanley, but it was not.

I remember hearing the story about King and the Stanley also.
The article, however, seemed to be referring to Kubrick's choice of location.

Addendum: actually going back and scanning through the article, it also mentions the Stanley as being King's inspiration.

Hahaha!!!

Right before the royals arrive, Hollywood ought to sneak "Jack" into the hotel early ... set him up in that large spacious play room ... at a table with an old "Underwood" typewriter ... have the floor strewn with piles of typed paper with that repetitive typed line saying ... (oops, I forgot what it was ...)

Yeah, Bill and Kate, "HEEEEEERE's JOHNNY!!!!"

hahaha

Hopefully they'll fly them in so as not to disrupt traffic.

Anybody with any direct knowledge of how the Queen's visit was handled?

If I remember right there were a couple of Secret Service agents killed in a car accident on 41 who were on their way to the Park as part of the Queen,s protection detail. That was years ago. Do I have that right?

Yes, three secret service agents were killed when they were struck by a Mariposa Sheriff deputy's patrol car head-on when the sheriff's vehicle crossed the center-line. But according to a number of accounts, it occurred on Hwy 132, not Hwy 41.

The second link seems odd. Looks like it was run through some sort of translation software or maybe ghost written by some software.

Here's a docket of the appeal by the US DOJ that the US government had to contribute 30% of the settlement for the families of the Secret Service agents:

Apparently the CHP analysis of the accident was done to death:

"This book illuminates the places that queens and presidents never see."

The above quote is the final sentence on the back dustcover of this superb book of photographs and essays that was commissioned several years ago by the (then) Yosemite Association:

Note: read the entire description to the right of the book photo.

William and Kate to stay at haunted hotel that inspired Stanley Kubrick's The Shining

It's the Tressider Suite on the sixth floor that supposedly is the source of the hauntedness:
http://www.historic-hotels-lodges.com/california/ahwahnee-hotel/tour/ahwahnee-tressider-suite.html

My wife & I didn't encounter any ghosts when we stayed on the 6th floor last year.

They won't need a Half Dome permit, since the Park Service is going take them to the top of Half Dome via helicopter after giving them a grand tour of the park by air.

Does William get to be the pilot?

He's a Royal Air Force search and rescue pilot. Maybe he'll get some action in Yosemite. grinning smiley

Oh groan....

Does anyone have any more definite dates about this? so I can avoid it like the plague? Sounds somewhat bizarre, I'm imagining the scenes atop Half Dome ...
