Hydrologic outlook
National weather service reno nv
1220 pm pdt fri jun 10 2011

...Possible snowmelt flooding of rivers and streams in the eastern
Sierra nevada during the next two weeks...

Warm temperatures over the next two weeks will cause increasing melt
Of the much above average snowpack in the higher elevations of the
Sierra. This melt will result in high flows and possibly some
Flooding on many rivers and streams in the area through the end of
June.

This area includes the following counties...

In eastern california...
Eastern sierra...Eastern nevada...Eastern placer...Eastern el
Dorado...Eastern alpine and mono counties.

In western nevada...
Extreme southwest washoe...Western carson city...Western
Douglas...Lyon and extreme western mineral counties.

The potential for snowmelt flooding over the next two weeks is high
On the following river basins...

Lake tahoe tributaries. In california...This area includes
Meyers...South lake tahoe...Meeks bay...Tahoma...Homewood and tahoe
Pines. In nevada...This area includes incline village...
Glenbrook...And zephyr cove.

Tributaries of the truckee river above reno uncontrolled by
Reservoirs. This area includes alpine meadows...Squaw valley and
Olympic valley california. Note...This area does not include the
Mainstem truckee river below lake tahoe...Including reno and
Sparks...Due to adequate flood control storage in upstream
Reservoirs.

The east fork...West fork and mainstem of the carson river and
Tributaries above lahontan reservoir. In california...This area
Includes woodfords and markleeville. In nevada...This area includes
Minden...Gardnerville...Carson city...And dayton.

West walker...East walker and mainstem walker river and tributaries
Above weber dam. In california...This area includes
Walker...Coleville...Topaz and bridgeport. In nevada this area
Includes wellington...Smith...Mason valley...And yerington. No
Flooding is expected below weber dam.

Mono lake tributaries. This area includes lee vining and june lakes
California.

Upper owens river tributaries in mono county. This area includes
Mammoth lakes california.

The warmest temperatures...And highest flows of the spring snowmelt
Season...Are currently forecast to occur between tuesday june 14th
And saturday june 25th. The highest threat of flooding will be
During this period.

There is also the potential for flooding of hiking
Trails...Campgrounds...And back roads throughout the sierra. Rivers
And streams will become increasingly hazardous for
Rafters...Kayakers and anglers as the fast flowing...And very cold
Waters continue to rise.

The very cold water this time of year can be quite dangerous when
Running fast and deep. If you are caught in the water for any
Length of time unprotected...Hypothermia is a deadly possibility.

Highest river flows typically occur during the late evening and
Early morning hours. A campground or trail may be dry and appear
Quite safe during the afternoon...But can quickly take on water at
Night.

Those with interests along area rivers and streams should keep
Informed of the current situation by monitoring national weather
Service flood watches...Warnings and statements.
