Camping at May Lake
July 09, 2011 05:07PM
I am planning a trip to May Lake in a couple of weeks. From what I gather from other posts the May Lake Road is not open yet. Am I correct in assuming that I would therefore start from trailhead #16 (May Lake to Snow Creek) and head north to the actual trailhead (#17). Does anyone know how difficult the trail is between these two points?

I have also read that the trail is snow covered for most of the way to May Lake. Is there any place to tent camp near May Lake that is free of snow (or might be in 2 weeks)?

Thanks

In two weeks there is a good chance the snow will be melted pretty much away. The road could be open also.
You would use a permit for trailhead 17 even if you have to park on 120.
Trailhead 16 is for heading south toward Mt Watkins.

May Lake has one of the High Sierra Camps. There's a backpacker campground - you'll be expected to stay in it.
