Sunrise - Merced Lake - Vogelsang
July 11, 2011 09:26PM
Another attempt to do the High Sierra loop in a weekend thwarted by conditions and the makeshift permit system in place at Tuolumne... we ended up doing only the south-of-Tioga-Road portion of the loop, but it was still a spectacular trip. There was hardly a cloud in the sky, and just a hint of mosquito activity at Merced Lake.

Pictures

Conditions: Tenaya Creek was crotch-deep (34" or so) when we started. Persistent snow didn't begin until about halfway up the switchbacks to the Sunrise/Clouds Rest junction. 100% snow coverage continued from the middle lake until north of the "pass" between Sunrise Lakes and the High Sierra Camp. At the top of the pass the snow was 3 feet deep or so. The camp itself was flooded and snow was still present on several cabin pads. Long Meadow had significant snow fields and was flooded in places. The creek flowing into the meadow (en route to the "Dolly Domes" ) was running swift and deep.

Cathedral Fork Echo Creek, on the other hand, was mostly snow-free. Echo Creek was running high, as was the Long Meadow outlet, and flooding the trail in portions, but most crossings could be done on logs. We had Merced Lake to ourselves when we arrived--we briefly heard sounds from a crew stationed at the nearby ranger station, and another party arrived later and camped in the camp near where, when open, they serve coffee and hot chocolate to the camp guests. We had a small fire and slept soundly that mild night.

The next day, we returned to snow near the Emeric Lake outlet/Fletcher Creek confluence. The big meadow on Fletcher Creek had large snow fields and was flooded in places. The crossing near the Emeric/Booth Lakes junction was running deep and swift, so we worked our way upstream--with some difficulty--to a log that my dad found on a trip maybe a dozen years ago. Snow was surprisingly light to the Vogelsang camp, but was 100% coverage with sun cups until well down Rafferty Creek.

Just before the Rafferty Creek falls, we met two volunteer rangers who checked our permit. We "of course" had one, but apparently the threesome not too far down the trail didn't--they hadn't wanted to wait until the permit station opened. The volunteers were escorting them out. Later, we passed a real ranger who was hiking in, presumably to cite these backpackers.

At the falls (always a favorite break spot), we realized we were on no pace to make it to Glen Aulin (much less May Lake) that day, so we decided to bail at Tuolumne Meadows. Just past the twin bridges we saw a rock that didn't look quite right; a few nearby stones fixed that. A nice couple visiting from the Netherlands drove me back to the Sunrise trailhead to fetch the car.

Love it (especially like the Babcock Dome one... and I see you also hiked up to Dolly Dome Cascades... v. nice)

Looks like the wifey is back in business. kewl.

I think I've concluded that every picture I take in the snow I need to take twice.
Once in the "snow" mode and once in the "auto" mode. In snow mode it looks so bright..
but the snow is whiter and the trees not all so black. If your camera has the same/similar
mode... give it a try.
Regardless I love the pictures and appreciate the effort it takes to put them up.
Wondering if itchy will see your rock...

Unfortunately the wife had to sit this one out, too :-(. We are hopeful for next weekend, though.

Btw, just flew (business trip) over the Northern Emigrant--saw Cherry Creek Canyon and Buckeye Creek, which reminded me of your recent trip there... Still lots of snow elsewhere in the Emigrant...

I carry two cameras... the small Lumix on scenery mode generally does fine with snow. For the big Canon, I underexpose on purpose so I don't blow out highlights in the snow. If I had more time, I'd adjust the curves in the shots so they aren't so dark, but this takes time... time better spent cleaning from the previous trip, or packing for the next one :-)

Nice pictures, thanks for posting. I have a Nelson Lake permit reserved a couple weeks from now, from your Vogelsang pictures it looks like I may want my ice axe for the Nelson Lake pass.

My 2 dollars worth... in couple weeks... snow REALLY gonna be so sun cuppy... as long as you don't start at 7am I
just don't think Ice Axe worth it going up Nelson. Plus... there's loads of trees.
I brought crampons last year June 20th on this loop:
https://picasaweb.google.com/yosemite.chick.on/Matthes
Never used them... (the trail is in the woods to the east of the route I took down to Elizabeth)
(not sure you could even self arrest before smacking a tree)

Of course it's your call. But please post what your thoughts are after you get back.

Thanks for posting. We took the same route about 3 years ago in August. No snow then. It's interesting to see how much snow is still there.

I'll probably pack both my ice axe and some poles (I don't hike w/ poles, they'll be an old pair of ski poles...) and see what seems reasonable to me when I get up to TM. I was thinking of the other side of the pass actually, its closed-in enough that I was thinking it wouldn't melt out the way basilbop mentioned the area south of Vogelsang had.

I put another picture in that set of the pass from east of Echo Creek looking
north to Nelson Pass. I thought maybe you were thinking this side... still wouldn't bother.

I'll shut up now

Have fun (ok, now)

I went over Nelson Pass to Matthes, then returned via Cathedral Pass.

I packed my ice axe in the car, it stayed in the car, I didn't miss it. On the north side of Nelson Pass, aside from the normal early season collection of snow at the top, there was a fair bit of snow at the bottom of the climb out of the Elizabeth Lake meadow. Once the trees thinned out the snow did, too. Only small patches on the south side, the pass itself is clear. Most importantly, the climb from Echo Creek to the saddle east of Matthes was snow-free.

The snow that was there was generally soft, and comparing posted photos from two weeks ago, one week ago, and what I saw, it looks like snow is melting fast. It didn't get very cold either Friday (Tuolumne CG) or Saturday night, I suppose lack of nighttime freezing might be accelerating the melt.

Pics later.

The north side of the pass between Elizabeth Lake and Nelson Lake holds snow fairly late, but it is not that steep, except maybe a short section at the top. The south side could very well be melted out from the top. If you have never done it, continuing down this fork of Echo Creek makes for another nice way to get to Merced Lake from Tuolumne--easy cross-country, nice meadow, and good cascades. You join the Echo Creek trail just below the upper bridge, so there are no nasty crossings except just below Nelson Lake. Another good route is to go to Reymann Lake from Nelson, then up and over the pass near Rafferty Peak and traverse down to Tuolumne Pass. This one will have snow, though.

Basilbop,

I am so fortunate that you posted this information. How did we backpack before the internet?

I have a few questions for you, did you happen to see if the bear cabinets were at Sunrise Lake HSC? I'd prefer not to take a bear canister if I can avoid it.
Also did you take JMT or the trail head from Tenaya lake? We have (3) 30 year olds leaving at Tenaya Lake about 3pm on Saturday the 16th. I know its gonna be tough, but I think we can make it and set up camp by 6pm.

We are going to do Cloud's Rest and Half Dome on Sunday.

Any help would be appreciated,

Ryan

Take bear cans! That way you don't have to stress over getting to Sunrise HSC in three hours. Camp at one of the Sunrise Lakes instead, much more spectacular. It sounds like you'll only have the one night out on the trail, make it a great one. Besides the HSC is a couple of miles out of your way if you are heading to Clouds Rest.
Re: Sunrise - Merced Lake - Vogelsang
July 13, 2011 09:02PM
We did see the bear boxes at Sunrise, not sure if they were functional--sometimes they get damaged during winter. Many of the campsites at Sunrise were still snowy or flooded, but a few seemed to be usable. But I agree with Katy--take a bear can, and camp a the lower lake (clear of snow) or... dry-camp at the view west of the Sunrise junction (9242' on the map--carry water from the stream you'll follow up the switchbacks) or just north of Clouds Rest (carry water from the creek between the two junctions)-- both of these have some nice views. Also, you can hike until 8:00 or so this time of year, and the moon should be full-ish.

I guess this is what we did before the Internet--or what some of us still do--pick a route, make some guesses at conditions, and be both prepared and flexible. Some of the best trips are those that don't go according to plan--too much snow, uncrossable streams, etc.

3rd vote for take the bear can. Who the he-c-k wants to be tied to a particular place out there?
Having to be at a certain place is dumb in my book.
As for the internet comment... I'm actually quite surprised at how many ppl ask about conditions.
All I say when the ranger says "snow... blah blah" is "that's nice... we don't have to be anywhere...
we'll deal with it... it makes it fun... "
Seriously, I rarely plan exactly where to go or anything. Go with 3-5 days in your pocket...
and explore. Have fun. Best trips are like that.

I avoid it... but I've walked thru it enough... there's bear boxes there.
Technically you could hike to LYV, and then jump on the HSC loop and not need a bear can.
(all the HSCs have bp'er campgrounds with bear boxes) (something I avoid too)
If it were up to me... if you have a backpack w/ a sleeping bag... you should be
required to be able to store your food properly w/o a bear box.
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many people get out there and end up feeding the bears.

I saw someone feeding a bear 6/25-26, because they couldn't reach Glen Aulin HSC's bear boxes due to conditions.

Re: Sunrise - Merced Lake - Vogelsang
July 14, 2011 01:30PM
FWIW, when we did this trip, we didn't carry a canister, but that was because we knew our "bail" options (Sunrise, Vogelsang) also have boxes, and given the elevation of Merced Lake, there was zero chance all 10 or so boxes would be unusable (due to snow, for example). I have also done this trip, or at least parts of it, many times. This is probably the only Sierra trip I would do without a canister, including areas that don't require them, such as the Emigrant or parts of the SEKI backcountry.
Re: Sunrise - Merced Lake - Vogelsang
July 14, 2011 07:04PM
I myself have had rangers waaaaay in the outback come up to me and request to see my can ... even while hiking along ...

"Hi there, would you mind pulling over ... set your emergency brake ...may we see your permit and your can?"

They're pretty nice to run into ,, and always offer an immediate conditions update ahead.

I suppose it's either:

"Advance to the nearest railroad and buy it if it is unowned" ... or

"GO DIRECTLY TO JAIL! DO NOT PASS GO!"

depending on the status of the answer you give to the question they pose ...

I was looking to avoid a can because one of the people going is a newbie and doesn't have a true pack. The toilets would have been nice too.

My wife would never let me go without a can. I am also worried about there being any cans left by the time we get to TM.

At this point you have all peer pressured mesmiling smiley into trying to rent 2 cans and setup camp wherever. If we can't get cans we can stay at the HSC.

Tom,

I don't mean to be rude, but you don't seem to be as helpful as you think you are.

First you were corrected about your thoughts on mandatory canisters. Then you speak of never hearing about the lack of bear canisters even though you have your own so you wouldn't know about it. Are you trying to reach a post goal here? I am new to the forum so I am just trying to figure out the point of popping off without valid information.

We got the last one last year at 10am in TM.

Thanks everyone I'll keep you posted on the trip and the endless supply of bear canisters.

I was told by rangers they had record numbers of backpackers last year.
(or just a ridonkulous amount) (so that probably had an effect on the low can-age count)
I would be flabergasted if they didn't have cans to rent now... mainly b/c
from what I am hearing there's just a boatload o peeps who are not going
due to conditions yet...

It's an understandable statement that they don't run out ... since they are required everywhere.
What do they do if Joe Blow walks up and says Sunrise Lakes and I need a can?
I presume they have to tell him that he has to camp at where there is a bear box...

My comment w/r to everyone having a can was mainly due to the fact that people
are many times over confident when looking at a map at what they are capable of.
It all looks so easy on the map... wink (believe me... I do the same thing!)
(I wanna go up this peak, and that peak and ... and ... oops... maybe I just go up one)

Anyway, have fun out there

Actually, you are a bit rude. When I said I've never known availability of cans to be an issue it simply meant I've never heard anyone else ever running into that problem. As for mandatory canisters I was merely reflecting what the printed regulations call for on the NPS web site. We correct each other on this forum all the time and it's no big deal. Corrections are for the most part appreciated. When I'm mistaken I have no problem being corrected. I do have a problem being told I'm not attempting to be helpful or that I'm going for some kind of posting record. What's with that nonsense? It's a bit of a reach to interpret my comments as you chose to. If you have a burr up your rear end take it somewhere else.

And it's Jim, not TomBowing to his greatness

When you pick up the permit, they will ask if you have a canister that's on the approved list. If not, you will be handed a canister and you WILL rent it, or you don't get the permit.

Unless that ranger is inconsistent with the other rangers I have dealt with in the wilderness offices.

The presence of bear boxes is not a reason to leave the canister. What if you have to camp for some urgent reason before you get to your destination? What if you are hurt and can't go on? Are you going to be able to stay up all night and all day defending your food?

One more time for the slowold people:
http://yosemitenews.info/forum/read.php?3,41154,41452#msg-41452

and basilbop didn't carry one as he said:
http://yosemitenews.info/forum/read.php?3,41154,41492#msg-41492

If you're still reading or care I did ask when I got my permit this weekend.
The ranger said that pretty much even if they did run out of cans then
they would make you go and get one, from say, the valley. (quite the
drive from Tuolumne Meadows)
At BOF once they run out (they never have according to him) they
one of the rangers would run over to HH and snag a bunch more.
I started off by asking "Say you ran out of cans and someone needed/
wanted one and they WEREN'T going to say Glen Aulin HSC or
May Lake HSC what would you do?"

And again, 110% Chick-on guarantee you can get a permit to LYV and
not carry a can. What you think all those bear boxes are for?

If you made it this far... one little tidbit which I find interesting...
Third time I got a permit from the same ranger this year. 2nd time
he says "what was your name again, can't remember?". This time he says
"where you want to go now?" and starts typing my name in.
Since I can meet someone and forget there name w/i 2 seconds
these guys amaze me.

Have a nice day

Real Quick.

We made it back safely. The bear canister was absolutely needed because we made it no where near Sunrise HSC. Jim will be happy to know that there were plenty of bear cans. Weren't many people out on the Cloud's Rest trail. Most of them came through at night to be there for sunrise.

Re: Sunrise - Merced Lake - Vogelsang
July 21, 2011 08:20PM
I am too lazy to start a new thread. I'll give you the real quick run down.

EVERYONE WAS RIGHT ABOUT THE BEAR CANS

We got a late start on Saturday, didn't get to the permit station until 5pm. We got most of our mosquito bites in the parking lot at the tenya lake trail head. I didn't believe Basilbop's photo until we actually crossed in barefooted and froze. No point in putting on boots for 2 minutes.

We lost the trail at some point before the Sunrise HSC intersection. Looking at my topo map I think we were on the 8200' mountain on the eastside of the trail overlooking the Tenya Creek Canyon. At a certain point we were off the trail and it was 7pm. We decided to go all the way up the mountain and setup camp. GOOD THING WE HAD CANS!

Sunday morning we packed up and found the Sunrise HSC trailhead. We wanted to get a little closer to Cloud's Rest, but then it was hard to find a good place that wasn't swampy, but also had water. We finally found a creek on the Cloud's Rest trail right where the trail turns due West. Then we set out for Cloud's Rest and Half Dome... and back. Cloud's Rest was awesome probably saw 20 people up there in total. Half Dome was a million times better than it was before the permit process. Saw a few people at the ranger's side begging for tickets to the top.

I wanted to take the JMT to "forsythe" I think to the split in the Sunrise Trail back down the Cloud's Rest trail to our campsite. Instead we decided to go back the Cloud's rest trail was so steep(went along the saddle of the peak, not back to the top). We were beat after that.

Cloud's Rest and TM is so much quieter than the valley. I need to go 140 to 120 everytime so I don't have to drive through part of the valley. The yahoos were taking photos as they drive down the road. Most of the Cloud's Rest traffic was at night. A lot of college age kids were doing the moonlight hike.

Had a great time and I appreciate all the help from the forum.

This shows some of the snow closer to Cloud's Rest. It was worse on the Sunrise trail

Sounds like you had fun, thanks for posting.

Even if you find HSC bear lockers, it can be more fun to find somewhere else. I remember a trip I took towards Vogelsang...the HSC wasn't open yet though I guess it was going to open soon, there was late season snow but it had all melted. Lots of people were camped there. I continued on to Vogelsang Lake and camped. 1/2 mile away, on a Saturday, I had the place to myself.
