Re: The Named Trees of the Mariposa Grove

Found inside the 1920 Park Brochure for Yosemite was this table that listed the name and size of many of the Giants Sequoias in the Mariposa Grove.

Note how many of the big trees were named. Also note that the current California Tunnel Tree is NOT listed. Maybe it had a different name back in 1920.

Yosemite Park Rules and Regulations (1920): Facts and Figures


Now, if someone could find and post a map of the Mariposa Grove with the location of all these named trees clearly marked, it would be greatly appreciated.

I was hoping that someone could point to a website where possibly a map of these named tree could be located online.

If not, would the Yosemite Library in Yosemite Village have a map of these named trees in its archives? It would sure be fun (at least to me) to know which trees were which.

(Outside of the fallen Wawona Tunnel Tree, I would hope that most of these Giant Sequoias are still standing somewhere in the Mariposa Grove.)

Leave No Trace

Here is a link from the Yosemite on-line library that shows a partial map of the Mariposa Grove from 1923. (Illustration #88)
It's hard to read but many of the state named trees were surrounding the Big Trees Lodge.
Of course the lodge is gone now but I believe the current parking lot is near the location of the old lodge.

From the map it was on the Upper Grove (prob. a building is now the museum)

There are a number of named trees not on the list:
- Fallen Monarch
- Clothespin Tree
- Bachelor and Three Graces
- Faithful Couple
- Telescope Tree

Thanks for the map. Excellent. Need to go back. Haven't been on all the trails there.

I would hope the Mariposa Grove Museum would have the map...
then again, maybe the trees are marked up there... and I personally haven't seen them.
??? So much to do... so little time!
