.MONSOONAL MOISTURE MOVING FROM THE SOUTHEAST WILL BRING A THREAT
OF THUNDERSTORMS TO THE SOUTHERN SIERRA NEVADA AND THE KERN COUNTY
MOUNTAIN AND DESERT AREAS. IN THE KERN COUNTY DESERT...LOCALLY HEAVY
RAINFALL COULD RESULT IN FLASH FLOODING OF DRY WASHES AND
ARROYOS...AS WELL AS NORMALLY FLOOD PRONE AREAS. AS FOR THE MOUNTAIN
AREAS...INCLUDING IN KERN COUNTY AND THE SOUTHERN SIERRA
NEVADA...SLOW MOVING THUNDERSTORMS COULD CAUSE FLASH FLOODING IN
NARROW CANYONS AND IN RECENT BURN AREAS WHERE VEGETATION HAS NOT

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN HANFORD HAS EXPANDED THE

* FLASH FLOOD WATCH TO INCLUDE A PORTION OF CENTRAL CALIFORNIA...
INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING AREA...SIERRA NEVADA FROM YOSEMITE TO
KINGS CANYON.

* FROM NOON PDT TODAY THROUGH LATE SUNDAY NIGHT

* SLOW MOVING THUNDERSTORMS MAY PRODUCE LOCALLY HEAVY RAINS.

* AREAS MOST VULNERABLE TO FLOODING WILL INCLUDE ROADS ALONG THE
FLANKS OF MOUNTAINS AND RECENT BURN AREAS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT CONDITIONS MAY DEVELOP THAT LEAD
TO FLASH FLOODING. FLASH FLOODING IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.
YOU SHOULD MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION
SHOULD FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS BE ISSUED.

Do take these flood watches in consideration...

Yesterday there was a severe thunderstorm warning up Bishop Creek Canyon at about 3pm, centered over Aspendell moving to over Big Trees campground. Haven't been able to get any further info.

Also the was a flash flood above Whitney Portal. The Mount Whitney trail closed at 11pm. Some hikers were stranded between Trail Camp and the portal. The campground had some mud come through. The road is now open and the trail was expected to reopen at 9am today.

Clouds were already forming above Mount Tom this morning at 6:30 am. Expect round 2 today...localized heavy rain.

At noon some thunderstorms were already popping up on radar.

Too bad that the Tioga Pass webcam isn't operational yet.

Fortunately, the CNAP/CCCC did receive funding from the Dave Peterson Memorial Fund to replace the Tioga Pass webcam that was damaged by a lighting strike. They expect the webcam to be back in operation later this summer if everything goes as scheduled.

They ought to get a better name, or at least come up with a better acronym.

Not really.

Absolutely not.

Monsoon season brings about these types of thunder storms on a regular basis to the High Sierra in the later summer months.

They have a fire on Geiger Grade near Virginia City. Probably caused by lightning. The internet just came back up at Tahoe. Also probably knocked off by lightning.
