Ran across these looking at other things in my stash o pictures.
Off trail... and a LONG way from any trailhead:

This forum will become quite boring when Chick-on gets a GPS-enabled camera...

His current Panasonic camera is. (I have the same model -- a great little camera.)

Yes, the camera has GPS... but I have never even turned it on.

As for the pix... the hope/idea is that others out there get a kick out of them like I do and
want to go there... unfortunately that seems to seldom, if ever, happen.

There is a silent group (probably the majority) out here that lurks enviously and follows the adventures of the chicken-goatman.

Isn't the GPS turned on by default? On mine it was.

Perhaps... then I stand corrected... I turned the GPS off the first time I turned the thing on... wink

My old Lumix was getting wonky, and the version I replaced it with (DMC-ZS10) has GPS. Turned it on for the GCT dayhike, but it wasn't great at getting a fix from the belt-pouch, and I didn't feel like relocating it to someplace higher with a better view of the sky. The location info it auto-determined was useless ("TUOLUMNE", "STANISLAUS", "MARIPOSA"...) Also, the GPS drained the battery fairly significantly.

Same question as wherever...where's this? It looks a little bigger than the Tuolumne River Little Devils Postpile.

The answer is:

Rancheria Mountain (north of the trail)
(hit the bench markers on USGS map and you'll see it)
(8586, 8561)

Have not been to 8304 so dunno about that.
And if instead of dropping down going east on the trail...
head east up a little knoll... and you'll see the same sort of remnants...
not a impressive as above... but the same idea...

Huh. I may have to add that to my collection of basalt stands.

Of course, I have get to go to the biggest, and most well-known...
