I was reading up on Picaridin, and according to Sawyer (a company that manufactures both DEET-based and Picaridin-based insect repellents) Picaridin is more effective in repelling biting flies than DEET.

Sawyer.com: Sawyer Premium Insect Repellent (20% Picaridin)

For locations in the Sierra (and elsewhere) where biting flies are a big problem, it might be worth a try to use a Picaridin-based insect repellant instead of a DEET one.

I tried Picardin and got eaten several times. No thanks. Mosquitos don't seem to care it's there.

Picardin doesn't seem to ward off chikins either... but the claim was about biting flies.

I'd rather have flies than skeeters.

Maybe add DEET to the Picardin. DEETPic? PicarDEET?

I used Picaridin on my last trip up there. It seemed to work ok, maybe not as long lasting as DEET, but it kept the skeeters off me. Nice to hear it is effective on flies too.
