Yosemite in the Rain

I love Yosemite in stormy weather. In honor of the first autumn storm
post up some favorite photos if you got 'em.

Here are a couple from my meager digital archive to get it started:

El Capitan

One of my favorite photos of Yosemite, from Dewey Point on a rainy day:

And this one of Crown Lake, (just outside the park, just after an afternoon shower)

Beautiful, looks painterly. It's always refreshing to see familiar places from less common perspectives.

Had some lovely rain in Tuolumne Meadows Thursday afternoon/evening...waited for a magnificent sunset, but it continued to rain then a little subtle color finally appeared with the alpenglow. (Wednesday evening, the clouds disappeared right before sunset...was on the slope of Lembert Dome to watch...)

We were there last December when Calif was hit with that very lengthy storm. Out of our 5 days, it rained 3, snowed one and was partly cloudy 1. Curry Village was flooded in some areas, there was mud everywhere, the walls were hidden behind clouds. Yosemite in rain... I've kinda had enough of it for a while.

New year's day 2010: Snowcamped out by Dewey point. It had snowed all day and cleared just in time for a gorgeous sunset.

But my favorite time to visit the valley is November, so I have lots of rain pictures from then.

A gloomy November day in the valley, view from somewhere along the Yosemite Falls trail.

The next morning...the steady overnight rain had made the fall colors come to life.

Last november, Old Big Oak Flat road just before all hell broke loose in a big storm.

Thanks! And going back through my November valley photos reminds me that it's about time to plan a trip there this fall (I usually spend my birthday weekend (nov 7) in the valley)

A few I hope haven't shown before:

The best is when it's like the last one. If it's just dull and gray... it's fun to hike around in... but doesn't make great pix imo.

Half fun

I agree and I'll extend that to blue skies as well. Pure blue w/o clouds = less interesting pictures.

Yup. But pure blue is a whole lot better than contrails:

I think the impressive thing to add is that the pre-photo was the night before (windy as heck that afternoon and evening). The post photo and the green Ninja one was the morning after. We had few winks here and there but it was a heck of a storm that night. So, to summarize you are seeing about ~15-20 hours time difference in those peektures...

Here's a recent one I took. Not exactly in the rain, but it was overcast with thunderstorms.

Can't tell you all how nice it was to come home from work last night to see all these atmospheric photos. Thanks, it's been a rough week.

Maybe this goes under Yosemite in the Snow, but here are some shots.

Here is the valley early in the morning after a storm and before the sun melted the snow off of all the trees and rocks.

Is this near Peeler Lake? Looks very familiar.

MOOOOSE >>>"Is this near Peeler Lake? Looks very familiar"

Nope. Chick-on seems to have been to a lot of my favorite remote places? Caught in very nice light Mr Bird, congrats. Its in Kings Canyon NP, and is a bit away from a use trail. One of several ponds in that area we checked out. Recall some moron had constructed a huge illegal bonfire on top of a slab next to it and we totally dismantled the cretins mess. The rib is one of the most impressive little known formations in the Sierra. And I hope it remains so haha. We base camped nearby three days but I only was lugging a 6x7 and regretted not having my 4x5 thus need to go back. But what a long ways from the trail head.

November 2, 2006, along Illouette Creek. A rainy day is a good day for fall leaf photography if one is prepared to deal with foul weather. I walked around for hours that day in full rain battle gear. Not only does it take careful planning to keep one's camera gear dry, but walking about in wet rocky areas tends to be precarious. A bigleaf maple with some Pacific dogwood behind at a moment of magnificent light. Captured with my 150mm Nikor on a 4x5 sheet of Provia 100F. Read the full story here:

Sorry I missed this. Kings isn't anywhere near Peeler. wink
(but I get what you are thinking)

That's Ericsson Crags in Kings Canyon taken from the lake at 10,735

It's a gorgeous area. There used to be trail thataway up and over
Harrison Pass. Don't expect anything now. And I'd be selective who I
took to Harrison Pass.

The Headwaters of the Kern is also a spectacular area.

Not Yosemite, but taken from that derelict fire road/trail immediately north (and UP) from the entrance to Willow campground. The road to South Lake.
