Fairview Dome
September 25, 2011 10:26PM
Is there a hiking route/scramble from the back? How steep is the route compared to Snake Dike or Tenaya Inner Gorge? And is Half Dome blocked by Tenaya Peak and/or Clouds Rest?

Thanks.

Some entries in summitpost.org and supertopo.com describe the S side descent as an easy walkdown ["Class 2"; "sea of granite"]

Awesome, looks fairly easy and straightforward then. I only found one site that mentioned something non-climbing related. The hikers who did it said it was a class 3 or 4 walk, but it must have been up/down a different/steeper side.

It's a nice quick hike, easy if you are comfortable with friction. Follow the climber's trail from the road to the base of the cliff, skirt around to the right, all slabs from there. There are a few cracks you can follow if you want something to grab onto. It's not as steep as Snake Dike. I can't remember if you can see Half Dome but there's plenty of other stuff to look at.

Essentially you are reversing the descent listed here:

http://www.supertopo.com/rock-climbing/Tuolumne-Meadows-Fairview-Dome-Regular-Route
There is only one descent route: walk south down the giant knobby slab of the dome. The descent is mostly 2nd class with one 3rd class section. Bring approach shoes unless you want to kill your toes! Climbing shoes are not needed for the descent. After getting down to the bottom, contour back right along the face until you reach the base of Lucky Streaks, then follow climbers’ signs back to your car.

From the same Supertopo link:

Park in an obvious six-car pullout in trees—the only pullout on the south side of the road—3.4 miles west of the Tuolumne Store and 4.2 miles east of Tenaya Lake. From the pullout, follow an obvious trail that heads directly from the left (southeast) corner of the parking lot toward the dome. Follow climbers’ trail signs; please do not stray from the trail. When the trail splits near the base of the dome, stay on the left trail for the Regular Route or the right trail for Lucky Streaks. Great Pumpkin starts 50 yards right of Lucky Streaks.
