There are 16 claims. The first one reads like this:
1. A portable device for deterring an attack by an animal upon a user, wherein the device is easily carried by a single user, the device comprising an inflatable figure that increases rapidly in size upon activation by the user, thereby scaring the animal and deterring the attack upon the user.

Actually, upon further review, your link DID work, but in an unexpected way. It downloaded the PDF file onto my computer. That's the first time I experienced that clicking on a link on this forum.

(Note: the link I provided on my post above just takes one to the Google Patent page where one can view the PDF file online (without it being downloaded onto one's computer).

I actually have one of those, it doesn't violate the patent either. It's sold everywhere under the guise of rain protection. Umbrellas work great.

Yes - but you don't make many friends when you sound that whistle really loud at 3AM in the middle of Upper Pines because you hear the rangers chasing after the bears.......and your wife will get really mad!!!!!!

In my experience blowing a whistle whilst running at the bear works very well.

Here's an alternative pop-up device for bear protection. Starts about 1:30 into the video. For the its pop-up capability however, you have to keep watching for the full demonstration of the device to see how it integrates tightly with the backpack.

Technically, it's not a patent. My understanding is that the application was abandoned. Perhaps the ridicule from the guys at the Patent Office got to be too much. Or perhaps bears have become better mannered. Or perhaps the inventor ran into a grizzly, instead of a black bear....

Ah, OK. So assuming it goes nowhere hikers are free to soil themselves at the sight of a bear without risking infringement (they seem to grant so much stupid crap I just assumed it'd be approved).

Perhaps the device was not able to be demonstrated effective against intelligent animals like woodland creatures.
Activated by a proximity sensor, it likely could still be employed to prevent certain humans from venturing beyond safety barriers.

Best use suggestion so far. At the very least, it might confuse them.

I did find a patent for entertaining a cat with a laser pointer.
