Spent a couple of days playing around on Kuna Crest.
Typical October weather in the Sierra. Gorgeous.
Although somewhat strange in that not a single cloud in 3 days.

Campsite area view:

Not sure what the helicopter was looking for... but things in lens look closer than they appear:

Near where granite rocks meets black rock:

Kuna Peak. Got Stymied at gap. (class 3, boy I dunno about that):

Have fun

How many of you have to run to a map after getting one of these great trip reports from Chick-On? Thanks for posting!

In case you missed it... you should check out basil's report covering some of same area here:
http://yosemitenews.info/forum/read.php?3,46203

There are quite a number of ways up to the crest .. I've gone up twice via saddle S of Mammoth...
Depending on your destination and goals... it's class 2 up Kuna Pass (saddle SW of Helen)...

Next time I'll bring a rope or just go the easy way via Parker and Koip Peak Pass.

One other thing... for peeps that like the old cabins and whatnot... I found another one in
much better shape than on the trail to Mono/Parker Pass. It's between the trail
and Tioga Pass. If you think long and hard... you may be able to figure out where it is
and fairly easily find it.

Have fun

Maybe it's Class 3 from the other side (saddle).

Maybe it's Class 3 from the other side (saddle).

Kuna Peak from the otherside, from Koip Peak, is class 2 and straightforward. There is a plane wreck in the saddle between Koip and Kuna.

Another cool TR chick-on, makes we want to go out there now. I guess no big horn sheep sittings up there then?

Yeah, I really wanted to check out the plane wreck... but didn't want to end up a wreck myself.
The W side of that notch almost overhangs and was very steep with not a lot of blocks.
Carrying a full pack adds some difficultly... so saved it for another day... walked back following
Yosemite border and then dropped down to Helen and then over towards Summit Lake area
for the night.

Sorry some other notes for the backpackers out there...

25 degrees night 1 at 11,900
30 degrees night 2 at 10,600

Forgot Z rest in car in exuberance to get going (after hike to Snow Creek Cabin and Watkins area)...
Thought might be cold with Thermarest Neo Shorty only...
No problemo at all.

Quickly becoming one of my fav. items is Silk Sleeping Bag Liner. Highly recommend it.

If you backpack in this area... you must be out of the park or up on Kuna Crest S of Mammoth Peak to spend the night.

Have fun
