Was wondering when the "Tuolumne Meadows Winter Conditions Updates" will start this season?
avatar Re: Special weather statement
November 07, 2011 06:03PM
I don't think they even go up there until late December.

But what do I know?

Update: Thinking about it more... I'm certain the Winter condition updates start as early as Dec. 1.
However, Snow Creek Cabin is not unlocked until later. Sometime in mid-Dec. timeframe..
which is why I made the original erroneous statement.

Thanks for the info. Exactly where is the cabin located? A ranger or two spend the winter there, correct?

No, you are thinking of the Tuolumne Meadows Ranger Station, which usually has a married pair of rangers there all winter. There is also a bunk room not far away for back country skiers to use.

The Snow Creek cabin hasn't been a ranger station for many years. It is now maintained by volunteers, I believe.

Yes. That is exactly what I was referencing. Are the rangers in the TM station for the winter yet?

Hard to say. We'll know when we get the first conditions report from them.

Hard to believe they are not up there yet. Maybe they go up when the road closes? Budget cuts?

Why is it hard to believe? All their provisions are up there before the first dump of the year.
If possible they probably get dropped off in early December. If not then they will
hike and ski there. It's Thanksgiving week, maybe they spend it up there... but probably they
have extended family they want to spend xgiving with.
Regardless it is still pretty early... there can be little snow up there.
They JUST closed the road for good this year.

Of course you could call the park and ask them.
If I remember next time I see a ranger out in the backcountry I'll ask for you.

Have a nice day

Yeah. Wow. Looks like it will be open into December. A far cry from 2008
when hiked it in mid Nov. via Snow Creek(it closed before Halloween that year).
But that just reenforces that I wouldn't expect any winter update.
(winter starts Dec. 20th btw) wink

I don't think it is very surprising at all. The Tioga Road was open this weekend and likely to open up again this week or weekend. As such there is not much to report. Not much snow up there, ski hut not open, etc.

Paris...

Finally you get your TM Winter Conditions Update:
http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tmconditions.htm

So the answer is... they do a report when it makes sense... most years it's in December...

(it was Dec 8 last year (2011))

People may find it interesting to take a look at the high temperatures from
all of last years reports. Nuff said

Um, because last year "someone" used to always post them on this blog. Not saying who... Guess I kinda was expecting it here. Ooops, my bad.
