Saw this on another forum and figured I'd share the video

video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=b7XSFh5rYhI

The first segment is on the Dana Fork (according to the person who posted the video). Not mine, but figured people would find it interesting.

No double axel or even a single axel jump? Aw shucks... wink

Still, a cool video. Thanks for posting a link to it.

Very cool, thanks for posting! If I had any ice-skating ability I would give it a try!

Cool!

But very cold if you find out the ice isn't thick enough.

Those were the same things that I was thinking of when I saw the video and pictures on the other forum. Neat to be skating there but scary not knowing how thick and stable the ice is.

Ya, I would be scared! Were those cracks in the ice?

Great video!

We were on the cathedral lakes trail over thanksgiving weekend and saw about 2 dozen skaters on Tioga lake on the way out. We thought that was early in the season to be skating. Is Tenaya deeper than Tioga? I was also amazed at how smooth the lake froze, it was like mother natures zamboni had created perfect ice.

I would love to skate on Tenaya for my birthday next week, hoping Santa keeps the pass open!

There were at least 50 people on the ice at Tenaya Lake on Sunday the 18th of Dec midday. Not all were skating...some walking, some pushing or pulling sleds. And 1/2 dozen still out at sunset. ( One booming crack surprised me and made me jump.tongue sticking out smiley )

There was a couple doing tai chi on the ice on the Tuolumne across from Lembert Dome.

At the Dana Fork, someone had broken through on the edge of the ice. I warned some kids who walked out, but one broke through, too. His dad pulled him up the bank by his coat.

Tioga Lake looks too rough to skate on now.

Wow. We're hoping to head up that way late next week. Hoping the weather is good to us, but don't think I'll let the kids out on the lakes like that. That's a pretty big risk in my book.

When you look at the video above, check out John Dittli's other ice skating videos...this year he has one at Garnet Lake plus the Long Valley (Crowley Lake) one. In prior years, Royce Lakes and way up on Tulainyo Lake.

I've seen the Tulainyo one year(s) ago. Thought it was the coolest thing.
Been meaning to take skates along for quite some time... problem is...
usually the lakes are covered with fluffy white stuff... and if you want to
skate you gotta shovel. At least that is what I have seen out der in Yosemite.
I'm sure you can also find very old photos of ppl skating on Mirror Lake and
also Tenaya with 1920's type dresses on.

I really don't think the skaters at Tenaya Lake will appreciate being checked into the rocks though.

You could have found someone to play with today. Quite a few pucks out there.

Several years back someone wrote a piece in the New Yorker about ice skating on frozen lakes in the Sierra. Most years you have a very brief window between the lake freezing and snow covering the ice. This year has been remarkable. Sometimes you only get a day or two. Last week I looked down on Eagle Lake (I believe: eagle falls trailhead at Lake Tahoe; I was on a higher trail) and saw that people had cleared the snow for skating. It's a beautiful thing.

Thanks for posting this info.

We were able to get up there over the weekend, and it was great to skate on Tenaya Lake!

There were quite a few people there with the same (or better) ideas. One large group were sitting on chairs on the ice, had coolers with beer, and were watching their families playing hockey. They had brought all the gear including goals.

A ranger had recommended the eastern end of the lake. It did seem to be smoother at that end.

The ice was remarkably clear. In the shade, it was possible to see through the ice to the lake bottom.

How warm was it?

I guess even if it's reasonably warm, there's so much ice there that it's not going to get slushy. I remember hearing about an early Dallas Stars NHL Stanley Cup Finals at their old arena that had poorly working A/C. When the ambient temps went up to about the high 70s, the ice started forming puddles and made for a poor playing surface.

Which reminds me. Could they put a Zamboni on Tenaya Lake or is there a chance that it would break through the ice?
