Weather stations in Yosemite
December 22, 2011 11:12AM
Hey gang,

Does anybody know of any weather stations in Yosemite NP that keep historical temperature readings? I found one on weather underground but was wondering if there were any others that folks knew about -- i.e., anything in upper yosemite valley, etc.

"Yosemite Village-Visitor Center CA US CARB, Yosemite National Park, CA"
(looks like it's about 500 feet east of the Chapel)

There are a number of weather stations throughout the park.

Depending on what exactly you are looking for... cdec is the way to go for backcountry info imo.
You can get a decent idea of how much snow is out there and the river flows without tooo
much trouble. What stations record varies... so you have to poke around.
And many snow surveys are now done by either Satellite imagery or by foot.

Anywho... I swear I did some analysis of stream flow from a number of years in a thread ..
but can't find it... you can get all kinds of historical info from cdec.

For example:

Maybe go here and play around:
http://cdec.water.ca.gov/

On the left... maybe just click on station locator to find the station you want... and then go back and click on historical data.

This is about the only one I use for historical data...
Couple this with trip data from previous years and I find it not tooooo difficult to get a general idea of conditions out there.

YMMV

Have fun

Awesome thanks, there's a ton of cool stuff there. I just burned an hour inspecting the flow into Cherry Creek reservoir. It will help me plan my next trip up Kibbie Ridge and down Cherry Creek Canyon; last time, I waited a little too late in the season (mid October I think) and there wasn't quite enough flow, which left a lot of the pools stagnating instead of their usual spectacular clarity. I want to compare my photos from past trips to the relative flow rates and maybe it will help me nail it next year.

Kewl. I nearly opted for CCC again a couple weeks ago...
but instead went to Inferno... if you haven't seen a few are here:

Cherry Creek Canyon woulda been mostly frozen solid then... so it was the right call imo

Mid Oct. may be nice flow... (it would have been this year)... it all depends on when
the first big dump comes... if you go really early then it can be pretty sweet
on account you don't get the Kayuckers and the flow is outta dis world.

On this forum, basil and I were both in there around Memorial day
and then he zigged in there again later...

Hopefully I got them all...
As you know, Cherry Creek Canyon is just awesome.
