Ok, actually I dunno if it's true or not... but I just heard it yesterday from
someone up at Lower Cathedral. Saw a group of 3 guys there
(the only people I saw all day), when I skated by he asked if I heard
about Tioga closing... he had heard it from some 'yocals' down in
Yosemite Valley.
Why I telling you this? Well, if you haven't made your way up to Tenaya Lake
and you have a car and some ice skates (or feets) maybe you should.
It's purty darn kewl.
Ok, just a disclosure... I drove by both times when it
was still dark... so I barely saw it.... but skating on Echo, Upper and Lower
Cathedral had MUCH higher priority for dis birdy.
There were a zillllllion peeps out on Tenaya Saturday (saw them from Dozier Dome)
(next to Lower Cath).
I took some video and peekchures... I'll share in time.

Have a nice day

There is a trough coming around the 11th. So far it doesn't look like the Sierra will get anything out of it, but it might be the source of the rumor.

I forgot to say that the guy said they were gonna close it regardless of any weather.

I mentioned that I had looked at the weather just that morning and there was really
nothing in sight for quite some time.

The rumor I heard was the 14th regardless of the weather. The closing on the 10th would be a precaution with the coming weather. Another problem is that the West Side depends on Tioga being open for their income. They always raise a ruckus when the road is dry and the gate not open. There are many things to consider besides the snow level.

Might not be such a bad idea. Drove through today and there were emergency vehicles by the lake. Someone had fallen and hit their head. Apparently the exact same situation happened on Saturday as well. The slant to the rumor that I heard was that they were closing since they don't have the budget/personnel to patrol that area this late into the season. If it's straining resources to take care of idiots who don't realize that ice is slippery (who knew!) then that might be a reason.

A beautiful shot regardless of the lighting (looks good to me).

Anyone hear anything new about the potential closing of Tioga Road this weekend? I was thinking of making a visit but if its closed, there's not much point.

Other than the rumor posted here I've seen nothing.

Well... I put three * after the title!

The point of it all was... if you have the chance... get ur booty up there.
With MLK day coming up... and nothing in the forecast... I'd put money on it remaining open...

Now... what to do...

If only could get a ride to TM... could have a whole lotta fun skating a whole lotta lakes!
(while hiking back down to Happy Isles)

Talked to a friend in the park who talked to the superintendent. She passed along that he, the superintendent, said that they wouldn't close the road except for weather. Looks like it will stay open for a while.

That's good to hear.

I heard the same thing from the Yosemite NPS twitter account. No closure until snow.

Showers for Mariposa on the 19th. That could fizzle as have the past few 10 day predictions.

Showers for Mariposa on the 19th. That could fizzle as have the past few 10 day predictions.

A large scale pattern change for the north pacific and from northern
California up into the pacific northwest will begin to develop this
Weekend, although it does not appear to be a large precipitation
Producing pattern for our region quite yet (not through day 7). The
Big change will revolve around the fact that the trough over alaska
Will be replaced by an amplified upper ridge which was previously
Located near the west coast. This will open the door, at least
Temporarily, for cold upper trough energy to drop into the pacific
Northwest. Meanwhile, our region will remain on the southern end of
The cold trough energy through early next week with a fairly dry but
Significant cold front possible.

Model discrepancies begin to pop up already by sunday which is not
Surprising given that we are going to experience a shift in the
Large scale pattern. The 12z ecmwf/gem drag a strong cold front into
The region early monday while the gfs keeps it over oregon. The
Ecmwf and gem and at least half of their ensembles support the idea
Of a further south extent to the pacific northwest trough (and thus
Further south cold front), with the gefs showing support as well
With a -1.5 to -2 standard deviation bullseye in the pac nw trough.
Meanwhile, the outlier 12z gfs keeps the trough restricted further
North with a warmer more westerly flow aloft than the ec/gem.

With support seeming to lean towards getting a cold front through
Here early monday per the ec/gem, i have introduced a slight chance
Of showers to the northern half of the cwa sunday night and monday.
As far as possible precipitation amounts with the front, they look
Light at this time as models send the main cold pool aloft to the
North of our region with just a brief window of upper forcing near
Fropa sunday night and monday. Temperature wise monday, i have
Lowered highs a bit with the expectation that we will get
Significant cooling aloft with the fropa. However, keep in mind that
If the ec/gem are right we will be colder still but i did not want
To go hog wild quite yet with some ensembles a bit further north and
The 12z gfs still holding the cold front north of the cwa.

Tuesday and beyond, models come back in line with the large scale
Flow concepts as they quickly undercut the amplified ridge over the
Bering sea and bring fast and moist zonal flow into the northwest
Conus. This is bound to be a good precipitation producer for at
Least the pacific northwest. However, for our region is is difficult
To ascertain how much precip we could get (most likely days 8-10 or
Mid to late next week) as we remain on the southern periphery of the
Moist zonal flow and smaller scale details are indeterminate at this
Time.

Their facebook page says the following: https://www.facebook.com/YosemiteNPS

The Tioga Road and the Glacier Point Road are currently open in Yosemite. The roads will remain open until a significant weather event prompts a closure. For current conditions in the park go to http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/conditions.htm or call 209-372-0200 (press 1, then 1 again). (kc)

Basically the same thing they say when winter first arrives.
