Just couldn't pass up the opportunity to go skate on some lakes and rivers.
Almost want to play hookey from work and go back up. Sooo fun.

Cathedral Fork



Upper Cathedral



Lower Cathedral



The ice was the best at Lower Cathedral. And what a gorgeous day.
A bit windy at times and very cold out of the sun... but, dang, I love the Sierra.

Well... first of all... when some turkey keeps skating around you and flicking the puck over
your head... and says 1-0, 2-0, 3-0, 4-0... well... it gets old quickly
second of all... when that turkey falls on his noggin I gotta preserve some energy to
go fly and get help...

I did a whole lotta more downhill skiing that ice skating when I was young...
(note that I did not mention growing up)

Thought there would be more comments ... o well.. I probably irritate the crap out of many.

By any chance, did you check out some of the lakes at the lower elevations along or near Tioga Road to see if they had frozen over? Specifically, I wondering about Siesta Lake and Lukens Lake.

I did not. Even though I got to Echo by 9:15am.. I took a lot of time skating there and also at Upper and Lower Cathedral.
And then... instead of just heading back the domes in that area called me... and I then nearly
skated at the ponds there too... Ended up back at the car at 5pm. Didn't time it quite right... wanted to be in TM to
get some nice sky shots.

Anyway... I can tell with absolute certainty that those lakes are frozen. Lukens is higher than Tenaya.. and is also within a valley-ish
and surrounded by trees which helps... Siesta... heck, that baby may be frozen SOLID. (I drove by to and fro when it was dark).

I just watched your short YouTube video of Siesta Lake. I guess it wasn't frozen solid after all.

You're welcome. Interesting how these things work. If it was deeper it probably would be.
Was going to run up to Lukens but ran out of time. Maybe next weekend.

chick-on, I, for one, am reading all of your reports and anticipating the next ones...makes my morning to read them. Living a bit vicariously through your adventures. But in my case, I don't usually have time to comment because it takes a few minutes for the photos to load (as in the Dog/Tenaya Lake thread, too,) then I go on to the next.

Am looking forward to viewing your videos when I have access to WiFi again...smiling smiley

A few more for you:







Take a look at "Taking Back The Dome" if you haven't... I put one there too...
Another way to Marmut / Fairview is to take the Cath Lakes trail... and then right when it has the small down part...
head WNW and you have done most of the elevation via trail... Of course you can go the way I originally mentioned
in that thread and prob. avoid all humanoid contact (my typical MO)

Purdy! That first one is so milky white. I took a few pics on the Dana Fork where it was close to the highway...milky tinted with turquoise. I was fascinated by it's downhill slope and lovely water noise bubbling and gurgling underneath.

(I did know that I could go up Varmint via Cathedral Lake trail...contemplated returning that way, but I went up and back the route you showed, more or less...avoided human bodies but not the effects of cars and planes... Not a varmint turd present on the dome or Whale's Back)

It's at around 7900 feet. I'd be very surprised if Siesta wasn't frozen.

Last year's winter wasn't bizarre at all.

It was very typical of a heavy snow winter in the Sierra. I've seen a number of such Sierra winters in my lifetime.
