Anything paricularly photo-worthy around May Lake?
January 11, 2012 09:50AM
We'll be up this weekend to see the snow-free high country, and my g/f wants to do a short hike just to see what it's like and is thinking of May Lake.

I remember going there eons ago as perhaps an 11 year old, and not being very impressed with anything other than swimming in the lake itself.

Anyone?

Kids...

You'll have to hike from Tioga.. still short... maybe 7 miles roundtrip... sorry if stating anything obvious.

Photo-worthy? Doubtful

What it looked like earlier this year:

Was back in early October... I will find one for you... it may contain Old Dude though...

Thanks, I sort of thought it might not have things to make a hightlight reel.

Wonder why they closed the road, though?

I was being somewhat sarcastic... and provided links to pictures so that you could make up your own mind
on the matter... I personally find great stuff everywhere... even on a completely forested route.
Maybe it doesn't make the best picture always... but if it's interesting... I'll take a picture.
I know you want to go and take some nice photos.. I'm sure you should be able to find some nice stuff.
Go to the HSC and then head up due East... some nice views. And nice trees..
ok, they're lodgepoles... but it's a nice view:

The road is closed because:

And they don't typically plow the entire road... so it opens much later than Tioga.

Whatever you do... enjoy

I went up to May Lake last weekend. The hike in from Tioga Road (since May Lake Road is closed) is easy and almost totally snow free, but nothing special. The lake itself is frozen solid and fun to walk around on. There were a few other folks up there, but it was not nearly as crowded as Tenaya Lake. I wanted to climb up Hoffmann, but my friends weren't up for it.

I'd say that's photo worthy.

It's good fun jumping off some of those cliffs in the foreground! In Summer, that is. The hike from there up to the top of Hoffman doesn't take long (presuming that it stays snow free) and provides incredible views (like most every high point up there).

Have fun~

About how long does it take to hike up Mount Hoffman and back down (to May Lake)? From what I have read it is about a 3.5 mile round trip from May Lake.

Also, can anyone tell me how long it takes to hike up Mt. Dana from the Tioga Pass trailhead? There I think it is about 6 miles round trip, but slow going the further along you get.

For those without alien DNA it should be about 4 to 6 hours.
