...Unsettled weather on the horizon...

Cold nights will be the rule in the san joaquin valley tonight and
Probably tuesday night as well. However...The sub freezing
Temperatures will be short lived.

A series of pacific weather disturbances will be pushing into the
West coast beginning mid week. Each of these systems will
Gradually push scattered light rain and higher elevation snow
Farther south...Possibly as early as wednesday afternoon or
Evening from fresno north...But more likely thursday.

One of the stronger systems to move into central california is
Due friday or friday night. This system could spread rain and
Mountain snow as far south as kern county. Partial clearing is
Possible sometime during the day saturday...With another wet
System arriving saturday night or sunday.

Through early sunday...Central california is expected to be on the
Warmer side of the upper level jet stream. This will keep snow
Levels relatively high for this time of year...Generally from 8000
To 9000 feet. Cooler air may arrive sometime sunday as the upper
Jet sags farther south...And snow levels could lower to 4000 to
5000 feet.

A series of pacific weather disturbances will be pushing into the
West coast beginning tonight and continuing through the weekend.
Each of these systems will gradually push scattered light rain
And higher elevation snow farther south...Reaching central
California thursday.

One of the stronger systems to move into central california is
Due friday afternoon and evening. This system should spread rain
And mountain snow as far south as kern county. Partial clearing is
Possible sometime during the day saturday or saturday
Evening...With another wet system arriving sunday.

Central california will be on the warmer side of the upper level
Jet stream. This will keep snow levels relatively high for this
Time of year...Ranging from 8000 to 9000 feet. Cooler air will
Arrive sometime sunday as the upper level jet stream sags farther
South...And snow level could lower to 4500 to 5000 feet.

While it is still a little early to be exact...Rainfall amounts
Friday through sunday could range from a quarter of an inch in the
Southern san joaquin valley and tehachapi mountains...To near one
Inch from fresno north. In the southern sierra nevada...1 to 3
Inches of rain is possible...Especially in the foothills. For
Higher elevations above 7000 to 8000 feet...1 to 3 feet of snow is
Possible.

At this time...Snow is not expected on the passes heading into
Southern california. However if you have travel plans sunday or
Sunday night...Be sure to check the latest forecasts and road
Conditions for the Grapevine or Tehachapi pass.

Much colder temperatures will continue today and wednesday as a
Cold and dry airmass remains in place. A wet pattern is setting up
For later in the week as a series of low pressure systems are
Expected to move over the region.

.Discussion...
Satellite loops show mainly clear skies across the central
California interior this morning...With only a few upslope clouds
Over the lower kern river canyon. The clear skies...Low dewpoints
And light winds resulted in strong radiational cooling overnight. As
Of 17z /0900 pst/ this morning...Lows in the central and southern
San joaquin valley ranged rom 18 /at an automated station near
Gustine/ to 33 at the cimis station near kettleman.

The models forecast weak ridging to move into california over the
Next 36-48 hours. With a stable airmass over the region...Lows
Wednesday morning should be similar to this morning. With keep the
Freeze warning in place for the central and southern san joaquin
Valley through 17z /0900 pst/ wednesday.

An upper-level trough is forecast to reach the pacific coast by 00z
Friday /1600 pst thursday/. This will bring a slight chance of
Precipitation to the northern fringes of the hanford
Warning/forecast area. The 16z rfc qpf guidance calls for 0.15 inch
At yosemite valley between 18z thursday and 00z friday /1000-1600
Pst thursday/...And 0.02 inch at huntington lake. Precipitation
Spreads south thursday night to near fresno...With only slight
Chance pops for the southern san joaquin valley and the kern/tulare
County mountains.

The second storm is forecast to arrive friday afternoon/evening and
Model qpf is considerably higher. If this trend continues...Winter
Weather headlines may be needed with this storm.

Most valley temperatures this morning have dipped to 28 degrees
Or lower. Most meso-west obs range from 21 to 28 degrees most
Locales. Temperatures today will struggle into the lower 50s
Before another cold night tonight. Similar temps can be expected
By wed morning. However...As a low pressure area nears the west
Coast later today...Central ca may see increasing clouds during
The overnight. This could help keep temps up a few degs...Or at
Least lessen the sub-freezing durations.

Otherwise skies are clear across the region...Except for a couple
Of patches of residual low clouds in the foothills of tulare and
Kern counties.

The shift into a more unsettled weather patter will begin wed as a
Series of upper level shortwave push moisture onshore. This first
Of the series could push some sct light precip as far south as
Fresno thurs or thurs eve. A stronger shortwave will arrive fri
With rain chances spreading south into kern county...Probably
Later in the day or evening hours. This sys will move out quickly
In the fast quasi-zonal flow off the pacific. There will be a
Short break in the precip sometime sat or sat nite...Before
Another wet sys arrives sun. This shortwave looks like it will be
The strongest of the series with a good wetting rain in the valley
And foothills...Maybe even the high desert. Heavy mountain snow is
Possible abv 6k feet in the sierra.

The 00z euro and 06z gfs indicate the upper jet will begin lifting
Back to the north early in the week...But central ca will still be
Susceptible to some sct light showers into mon.
