avatar Kendrick Creek Canyon in 'January'
January 17, 2012 08:55PM
Chick-on's September Post on this location convinced me to add Kendrick Creek Lakes to my 'to do' list, and I took advantage of what's likely the last snow-free weekend of the winter to go there.

Regarding conditions...

1) I asked about ice and water supply...Laurel was open, except for ice on the S/W side. The pond just north of Laurel was iced over on the west side, the east side was icy on shore and open in the middle on Saturday, freezing over on Monday. The pond at 5840+, on the bench below Laurel, had an ice skim on the west half (west 3/4s on Monday), otherwise open. The freshet from the pond on Laurel saddle was frozen, but flowing underneath the ice, and had open water as it turned into the gully just north of 5840+. Kendrick Creek Lakes: Lake 5728 had ice on the south side, open otherwise, Lake 5683 was open.

2) As for blowdowns from the late November/early December storm...there was one 'walk around' blowdown just before the saddle at the top of the long climb from Hetch Hetchy, just before the pond, two 'step over' blowdowns around the pond, 4 or 5 mostly 'walk around' blowdowns just before Beehive. The trail to the north side of Laurel, from Frog Creek to the Laurel Lake inlet stream, was almost cross-country due to the blowdowns, including three stacked on top of each other at the inlet stream. Conditions in Kendrick Canyon seemed reasonable, mostly old blowdowns, one or two green. On the way out I talked to someone who camped on the south side of Laurel who described significantly better conditions getting into there.

I camped on a large patch of sand on the bench above pond 5840+. That is very impressive granite in that canyon, which I had to myself. A view from my campsite:

Lake 5728:

Frozen water formerly flowing towards the bench:

More Pictures Here.

Saturday's weather was gorgeous, Sunday morning likewise except for the wave clouds up-canyon, the winds picked up in the afternoon but died at sunset. Monday morning saw light, occasional non-accumulating flurries and I had to shake my water bottle to break up the ice until I reached the Laurel Lake Road junction at about 5200 feet.

Of course this is awesome. I was hoping you would post something.
I have the pond you camped near at 5883 in my set. This is one of those many gems
not many people venture to. Have it marked down to head into a little later this year...
to try to get the Aspens at their peak.
The granite is classic Yosemite in many ways. Around 5774 are some just incredible glacial bowls.
Next time I'll ensure I have time to play on the beach at Edith and also
investigate those bowls more.
There are also some great ridges in that area... some of which have volcanic rock similar to
Rancheria Mountain.

Anyway, next time you go in to Laurel.. take a peak at my map there... that is the quickest
and very open and easy way in....

Old Dude was with us down into Kendrick to just beyond where you camped ... but I think
his phone isn't working.

I see what you mean about getting into Laurel...the ridge cut by Laurel's outlet is extremely open, and its not far from there to Frog Creek.

When I passed the pond north of Laurel and saw the canyon beyond I was amazed...you'd never camp at Laurel and suspect _that_ was just over the ridge. It sure is rugged country, lots of deeply eroded joints in that granite, lots of little 'valleys' leading here and there. Lots of bear poop, too. I started calling out 'hey bear' just in case.

Yes, it's amazing country ... but then nearly everything north of Tioga is spectacular.
Most head to Sunrise and Cathedral Lakes on their merry way to Happy Isles and
Half Dome. And I've said it a thousand times... it's pretty darn easy to go out there
and see nary a soul. Non trivial to get to.. but worth the effort. Of course if you haven't
been thru Jack Main you should do that too. And you should definitely check out
Edith... and all the named lakes west of Jack Main...
I didn't post a "trip report" when went from Eleanor to Inferno and around about...
in October... but I did link to this set which is more NW Quad of Yosemite that you should explore
someday:
Linked to here:

Or direct link here:

just remembered ... this:

So I guess I actually sorta did... and you probably did see this set.

Anyway, glad you could get in there and play around.

Have fun

O... I hear you about the bears... but that is just your mind playing tricks on you...
Totally unnecessary in Yosemite... (sorry if I state the obvious to you)

Ah, then Richardson is where the wave cloud was forming Sunday AM.

Lots of trees were downed along the trail between the crest of 'Laurel Ridge' and Frog Creek, none downed on the west side of the ridge until near the inlet creek where a lot were downed. I wonder if those early December winds were coming in from the NNE - I remember coming out of Barlow Flat (Ventana) after a wind event that downed lots of trees, most of the downed trees had exposure to a specific direction, get away from that exposure and fewer trees were downed.

be carefuls... I didn't put "abuse at your own risk" on the map in my set for no reason
there's lots of nooks and crannies that may be difficult if not adept at xcountry-ing with a full pack
the portion in canyon by the Isthmus was the most delicious shrub-wise
and if you go when Kendrick Creek is roaring... you may have a lot of issues to deal with
If you're no set on getting to the lakes in the canyon and especially Edith then it's fairly
simple xcountry.

Be safe out der

thanks Chick-on, I will. Maybe I can pack to a certian point then setup shop and do some day hikes to explore w/o the 50 lb monster on my back.

That's what I did.

You will need to be able to cross Kendrick Creek to get to the lakes, the creek squeezes off the bench on its south side just prior to the lakes, so high water would be very bad.

I also set plenty of waypoints going out, there are as mentioned lots of little 'valleys' going here and there.

Here's the "Rancheria Mountain" type volcanics I was talking about.
