Inyo National Forest and BLM Plan Winter Prescribed Burn Projects

The Mammoth and Mono Lake Ranger Districts of the Inyo National Forest and the north zone for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) - Bishop Field Office are planning to implement several prescribed fire projects for habitat improvement and hazardous fuels reduction in the upcoming winter months. Smoke may be visible at times from Highways 395, 167, 120 and 203 as well as from the communities of Topaz, Bridgeport, Mono City, Lee Vining, June Lake, Mammoth Lakes and Crowley Lake.
Prescribed fire projects are expected to occur in mid-January with understory burning possible at several locations, including east of Hwy. 395 at Deadman Summit, along Owens River Road near Arcularius Ranch, and in the vicinity of Pilot Spring. Following the next substantial snow storms, slash pile burning will be conducted, and may continue into February or March. Pile burning is planned on national forest lands in the Mono City area, in the vicinity of Pilot Spring, west of Hwy. 395 near Wilson Butte, along Deadman Road at Crestview Guard Station, and east of Hwy. 395 near Lookout Mountain. On BLM lands, slash pile burning is planned in Stringer Meadow and in Aurora Canyon near Bridgeport, and in Slinkard Valley near Topaz, CA.
