Nearly all FS roads open on Apr. 15th ... conditions permitting.
It SHOULD definitely be open. Getting all the way to Shingle may be another story.

May head up there myself nxt weekend with the Chick-on mobile
(although there's a few in the valley I want to do still while it's still self reg... )

Thank you sir. Unfortunately, I can't make it out on my next set of off days, but if you haven't made it up there by the end of April, I'll let you know how it is...

I was told this earlier today:

"The road the the Shingle Spring trailhead is blocked by a downed tree about 1 1/2 miles from the top."

By any chance, it wouldn't be THIS tree?

I started pecking at it. But after a few minutes Billy told me to put my pecker away.
Said I was gonna hurt myself.

Just paint it to look like a Twinkie and wait for a hungry Chick-on to show up.

Where was that tree? I walked that road in early March and saw some recent saw work done below the Eleanor trailhead and along the trail from Shingle, along the road between Eleanor and Shingle I didn't see anything major, though in a couple areas I explored in the woods and missed switchbacks.

Well... that is why I asked you ...

(but you knew that... right?)

Here is where the tree was/is:

Prob. right at the arrow but could be anywhere in the pink line... I didn't mark it with a waypoint...

My trip was this:

I walked that stretch, don't recall anything that seemed 'major'.

If you walked that stretch... then you must have walked the entire road.... b/c above there is
steep and lots and lots o deadfall and yummy goodness.
Trees fall. So it may be new. We had a huge wind storm blow thru a few weekends ago...
I'd guess it occurred then...

I missed the area around the first big switchback after the Eleanor TH, and I'm pretty sure it was the second big switchback where I thought a little more cutting was required.

I'm hoping to be able to get out that way Sunday evening/Monday morning, I'll post the latest conditions when I get back.

Huh? Seriously, take another look at that tree. Unless you're driving a tank you aint moving it.
It needs to be cut.

Haha, I'm going to assume that was a joke...

Anyways, it was chainsawed and you can get through and apparently get lost and wander off to Edith from there.
