When I was camping on Dewey Point last weekend, I saw this brown snake that had been living under a friends tent. Couldn't find a match online so was hoping someone here could tell me what kind it is.
These are cool gentle snakes. I'm pretty sure one of their defense mechanisms is their stink. Last time I picked one up it took several days to get the smell off my hands.
As I rember from my scouting days, this is North America's only true constrictor. A little cousin to the big boas. As kids in Oakland, CA we used to catch them near the creek and play with them before tuning them loose. They would wrap around your thumb or wrist and squeez like crazy but were too small to do any harm. The ones we found were never any larger than one foot. Never tried to bite like Garter snakes.
