Will be worth it to pack a fly rod for a 5 day trip on the HSC loop? We'll be back packing it and cooking our
own meals. We do expect to have some down time near Cathedral, Merced, and Vogelsang, Can we catch
and consume? Suggestions welcome.

There are rivers that are catch and release only - the Tuolumne and the Merced mainly.

You will need a California fishing license and to review the regulations for the waterways you will be fishing, since there are also bag limits that vary from one location to another.

There are no catch & release requirements for any fish on any stream, river or lake in and around the HSC loop. The catch & release requirement for rainbow trout only applies to the Merced River starting from Happy Isles (Yosemite Valley) down river to the Foresta Bridge in El Portal.

The bag limit is the same throughout the HSC Loop region of Yosemite: 5 fish per day; 10 fish in possession.

Yes, it is worth it. There are nice trout in these rivers, although they get more pressure than some of the more isolated parts of the park.

There is great lake fishing around all those areas. I've seen some big fish get pulled out of Evelyn Lake which is about 1.5 miles from Vogelsang, but there is fishing all around there on down to Merced Lake. Bring your rod!
