Re: Need help ID'ing a peak

Does anyone know the ID of the "3 peaks" circled in the photo ? I believe Mt. Clark is the prominent peak on the upper right.

There is a place on the trail to Merced Lake, far below the elevation of this picture, where that feature is sharp against the sky. I asked a ranger about it and he said that to him it appeared as if I was describing Obsidian Ridge,

I think these are the peaks to the east of Obelisk Lake. I don't think they have a name--and it's probably not "The Obelisks" since "Obelisk" comes from the original name for Mt. Clark.

I believe those are the Cony Crags which are just East of Washburn Lake.

Yes, you are right. That is Mt. Clark to the upper right.
As basil said, that ridge is the ridge that is directly south of Obelisk Lake.
If it is called Obsidian Ridge.... that's pretty cool name.

Ooops... basil said east... and he's right... but I'm right-ish too...

Thanks, guys. So if the name is Obsidian ridge, I assume volcanic activity was involved and there is, well, obsidian in the area ?

DNC refers to it as Obelisk Peak here:

“This High Sierra Camp trail continues past Booth Lake and rejoins the main trail to Merced Lake at Fletcher Creek. Follow the creek down to a small valley with an optional side trip to Babcock Lake, one of the warmer swimming lakes in Yosemite but a mile detour off your route. After leaving this valley Fletcher Creek becomes a series of whitewater cascade over granite slopes. The trail ascends the perimeter of the granite area and then steeply descends a series of cobblestone switchbacks. Be prepared for a few miles of this terrain until you reach the valley floor of the Merced River. You have a great views of Mt. Clark and Obelisk Peak directly across the valley.”

As basil already said... Mt. Clark used to be named Obelisk Peak.
But ... if you want to believe DNC ... go ahead. (I won't)
Are you sure they are referring to that ridge?
Or are they calling Quartzite Obelisk... or 10987 Obelisk?
Or something else entirely?

I've been curious about the name of this feature as well, but something tells me "Obsidian Ridge" is just a mistake on the part of the ranger. Obsidian, Obelisk, he got confused. I doubt there's much obsidian in all that granite. I've seen a few recent instances where the name Obelisk Peak has been repurposed.
