Yosemite National Park will celebrate the 96th birthday of the National Park Service (NPS) by holding a series of activities focused on “What NPS Rangers do” on Saturday, August 25, 2012. The activities will be held at the Yosemite Valley Visitor Center from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and will include presentations on Search and Rescue, Fire Management, Education, Resource Management and Science, and the University of California at Merced Ranger Program. Additionally, a youth-oriented service project will be led from the Visitor Center and at 8:00 p.m. an evening program on the history of the NPS will be held at the LeConte Memorial Lodge.

“Anniversaries are a time to reflect and celebrate one another and we want everyone, especially the children of America, to join the party,” said Yosemite National Park Superintendent Don Neubacher. “National parks belong to all Americans and offer something for everyone – so visit the park, wander a trail, take in the scenery, or watch a living history demonstration. Children especially enjoy the popular Junior Ranger program where they earn a badge by taking part in kid-friendly activities.”

The NPS was established on August 25, 1916. The United States was the first country in the world to set aside its most significant places as national parks so that they could be enjoyed by all. Today, we care for 397 national parks throughout the country – each one an important part of our collective identity. Some parks commemorate notable people and achievements, others conserve magnificent landscapes and natural wonders, and all provide a place to have fun and learn something. Are the rangers going to demonstrate how they use a radar gun to nab speeding motorist and how they execute the resulting traffic stop including the issuing of the citation?
