Tioga and Glacier Point Roads Closed for the Season in Yosemite National Park - news release

The significant storm systems that passed through the Yosemite Area over the weekend resulted in an estimated five and a half feet of snow accumulation in Tuolumne Meadows. Due to this significant storm, the Tioga and Glacier Point Roads in Yosemite National Park are closed for the season. These roads close each fall and remain closed throughout the winter months until weather conditions permit reopening in the spring next year.

Yosemite National Park is open year-round with snow removal on all other roads within the park. All roads within the park are subject to chain control or temporary closures due to hazardous driving conditions. For updated 24-hour road and weather conditions for Yosemite National Park, please call 209-372-0200.

Huh???

Besides the rarely traveled Chowchilla Mountain Road which has already closed for the season, the Park Service does NOT plow the Mariposa Grove Road either during the winter. (Or has that policy recently been changed.)

It is my guess that when they say "all roads" they are talking about the numbered highways.

But they also mentioned Glacier Point Road in their notice, which isn't numbered.

The Current Conditions page has been showing the Glacier Point Road and Tioga Road as Closed for several weeks now. Does this latest announcement mean they don't expect that to change till spring?

the 2 mile mariposa grove road is usually not plowed. when there is heavy snow fall then the park service may plow just one of the lanes in the road leading up to the mariposa grove; that way if an emergency were to occur then an ambulance would be able to drive up to the grove (the road remains closed to all public vehicles though). i have seen the road plowed up to the vault restroom near the grizzly giant inside the mariposa grove at times as well - but for the most part, it is usually unplowed inside the grove. but this is only used by government and emergency vehicles only - it is mainly for access for official use by employees and closed to public vehicles to my knowledge.
