A chicken hawk (otherwise known as a red-tailed hawk) appears to be on the lookout for all chick-ons in Yosemite on Thursday:

Here he is alternatively enjoying the view of Upper Yosemite Falls while looking around for his next meal ticket:

Not scared.

Thanks for posting some photos. Maybe I pay you back next week. tongue sticking out smiley

See you went to Mariposa Grove... any chance you take the map I sent
you and start trying to Id the previously named trees?

Chick-on is looking at you!

I took the photos of those trees keeping in mind of the map you sent me.

Unfortunately, I didn't hike too much of the Mariposa Grove since this was more of a family vacation and I went basically where my family wanted to go.

(They weren't too interested in hiking up the icy trail in the Mariposa Grove. Hopefully I'll have time for some solo excursions later in the month.)

I am impressed with the red-tailed hawk, but I had a big tomcat years ago who wasn't. I came home from work and saw my cat being dive-bombed by a red-tailed hawk and I figured the cat had met his match. Twenty-four hours later, I drove on my property and the cat was strutting around a half-eaten red-tailed hawk, with his tail straight in the air. The cat went on to survive 6 years of rural living with coyotes, owls and eagles before we moved to town and then he faced down most of the dogs in the neighborhood. I shared the hawk story with our local game warden and he agreed that was one formidable cat. Ironically, my young son was highly afraid of dogs at the time but he had a cat that put most dogs on the run.

(ready to pounce)

The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.
