Hetch Hetchy to Pate Valley
February 22, 2013 07:09PM
On a topo map, it looks like following the Toulumne River from Hetch Hetch to Pate Valley should be a piece of cake. Four miles, six hundred feet. But there's no trail on the map. So can this route be bushwacked, or is there something that makes it impossible? Or at least not fun?

You might want to look a bit more closely at that topo map. The trail from Hetch-hetchy to Rancheria Falls is plenty easy. But from there you have to get to the head of Hetch-hetchy reservoir...and that is one steep cliff you are going to have to traverse. That's why the trail goes over Rancheria Mountain instead.

OK, how about if I reverse the question -- is Pate Valley to Hetch Hetchy passable?

Chick-on will be back tomorrow and will be able chime in on the chance of getting from Pate to the head of HH. I haven't done it but I would guess it's not really worth the effort. May require rappelling to get downstream and then climbing to get back to Pate.
You will not be able to get past that point as the sides are very much just shear cliffs. You cannot swim or boat on the reservoir.

What exactly do you want to do? It's pretty unclear. You want to see the reservoir from where
the Tuolumne enters? You want to hike back the the Dam by not taking the trail?
Or vice-versa?

This is Hetch Hetchy:

And, of course, or maybe not, at what time of year exactly?

Have fun

I just noticed that there is no trail from Pate Valley to where the Tuolumne River gushes into Hetch Hetchy. There might be some nice fishing in that stretch. It might be nice to see that end of HH. But the fact that there is no trail suggests that there is some barrier making it impossible to get from Pate Valley to HH. And as for the time of year, I'm wondering if there is any time of year that it might be possible to make that bushwhack.

Um... I guess you don't understand that the photo above is where the Tuolumne enters Hetch Hetchy reservoir.
So of course it's possible.

There will be just as nice fishing upstream... where there is a trail and pools here and there.
I would recommend you do that first before you embark on going downstream.

The trek down was fun for me... waterfalls and cascades here and there...
but not eveyone's cup of tea... the reservoir itself can be somewhat depressing...

And technically you are not allowed below the high water line once you hit the reservoir proper.
Certainly there are loads of fish in HH. Saw another Bald Eagle when went there last fall.

Hope that helps you. (can't really tell w/o any response)
Def. want to do it again with a bit more water flowing... but you
def. want to be able to cross the river many times on way down.
It's impossible to tell reaction or interest without any responses...
thus only the single picture.

Have fun

Thanks, Chick-on, you're the best. Sounds like late-July in a dry year like this one might be the prime time for this trip -- enough water for fun, but not so much that you can't cross the river. And I like the picture of the inlet with all the logs and branches that have been washed downstream. It makes me want to go hike around the ridge and look out onto the reservoir and the cliffs.

You are welcome.

You should really take a look at this thread:
http://yosemitenews.info/forum/read.php?3,41914,41914#msg-41914

I was eventually going to put the Tuolumne into HH pictures there.
Might still.

If not obvious there are some HUGE logs at the entrance there. Pretty impressive.

Are you planning to then reverse course and hike back the way you came, if the road to Hetch Hetchy is closed still?

I nearly had heat stroke on Pate trying to go up in the afternoon. Bad section to be in without water - no shade, no water til Morrison in late summer. Next time I'm taking an umbrella. Or camping at the river, getting up at 4 am, and hiking up in the early early early morn.

In and out of White Wolf is by far the easiest way.

The "in" isn't too bad, but the "out" isn't something I'd call easy.

Really what I was getting at is... going in and out of Pate is one heck of a
lot easier than coming in from Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. And going back via
Loch Tablae and Rancheria Mountain (that-a-route) is a lot more difficult than
just hiking ur booty up to White Wolf.
Just take your time... take a nappy at the nice flat spot right at Morrison crossing...
and enjoy the journey...

Something like that.

Old Dude way; White Wolf to Morrison Creek, camp, down to Pate, camp two nights, back up to Morrison, camp, to White Wolf, drink beer, have steak dinner, camp.

I went down to Pate from White Wolf and then spent a few days working my way up to Tuolumne (with a group of 12).

Then there's WW to Ten Lakes, Mcgee, Glen Aulin, Pate, and then up to WW, beer, steak dinner, camp.

Wutt?

OD way is usually more of "we can get to Loch Tablae in a day, no problem".
Or "back in 1922 we used to eat that trail for lunch".

Just FYI...
Pate to WW is about 3600 ft. ... 10 miles... ish..
Pate to HH is 5400 ft (gets you to top o Ranch Mtn.) ... 26 miles... ish...

Just to be a little clearer here:

This is looking upstream. There are a couple of spots like this that you have to either swim for your life ... or
hike around... And some incredibly large boulders... which need to be navigated. And, of course, there is
plenty of poison oak to contend with and probably a few rattlesnakes.

Have fun

*shudders*

here's a few of the lovely critters I've encountered.
these here are all bull snakes though (the one sun tanning near the truck is a prairie rattler though)

it's the element of surprise that gets me though. nothing like walking along side the river or along a trail to suddenly have a snake zip along in front of you or rattle its tail under your foot as you're about to step next to it

i do have some pictures that I've taken inside yosemite as well but I can't locate the picture folder containing those right now.

Here's one ran into on the way down river:

Saw one other skin. But as is typical... they let you know you're intruding...
at which point... me... does a little dance...

Lucky you hear them! My wife and I were on our way down from Chilnuana Falls once. I was shooting some video of the top of the falls while walking slowly down the trail. My wife grabbed the back of my shirt and started pulling on it. My response was something like "What are you doing? You're messing up my video!" Turns out, I was now standing right next to a rattler, at about chest level in a small crevice in the rock wall right next to me. It was rattling away but, somehow, I managed to never hear it. One more reason not to hike alone! eye rolling smiley
