We were hiking back from North Dome - we were on the exposed granite heading back up to Indian Rock when the chopper flew over us. I just stopped and watched and someone in the back seat waved at me, so I waved back. I didn't want to wave first, for fear they would think I was in trouble. It was that freaking hot Saturday and I was afraid they were looking for possible fires sparked by lightning over the past few nights and fanned by the hot winds that had picked up, or were looking for hikers in distress, and finally, the lost plane... but it was definitely a Cal Fire helicopter, so I thought fire first...

I think that is the topper that is stationed at Crane Flat LO.

Yup... I told the noobs with me... whatever you do ... don't wave to them with both hands...
you're better off just looking up and not waving at all.

Gate was open on Sunday morning and I didn't know of anything prohibiting it, so I drove up and did the quick walk around the the helipad up to the lookout proper. For what it's worth, there were some Fire/SAR(?) personnel there who seemed undistributed by our presence.

I've seen the gate open a few times, thought about heading up. The path looks quite narrow though. What if there's an emergency while you're driving up? It'd be a bad, embarrassing situation.

It the gate is open... drive up. Park in the parking spaces... and walk the trail to the
lookout tower which should be open and in "museum" status.
The helipad and chopper are off limits. Stay on the trail which goes around the
paved driveway to the lookout tower and housing quarters.
