Red Peak to Mt. Clark

Ridiculous wind threw a wrench in my original route... o well...
Wasn't planning on even going by Bab/Emeric/Boothe... but a nice route nonetheless..

Nice, especially the shot of Babcock.

You've definitely got me beat this year... I counted this weekend... 48 days in the backcountry for me. I was sitting on my couch while everybody was out having fun getting snowed on. Hoping to hit 60 before New Year's.

Was that ice already forming on Emeric?

In the Bay Area, it rained really hard (for California) Saturday afternoon between 1PM and 4PM (over 1/2" within a three-hour timeframe). At what time did it snow in the Sierra?

Did you bring along just a shelter/tarp or a tent to protect yourself from the elements?

Thanks for the great pictures!

Where did you camp?

What kind of night time temp did it get down to?

I am trying to get up to Granite Park/Italy Pass this weekend to play around. The forecast is showing low twenties on Friday night, probably much lower around 11,500. I think that might be borderline too cold with our gear so we might stay in hotel that night and get an early start on Sat morning, temps that night are forecasted to be back into mid 30's, probably mid to low 20's at elevation. That, we can handle. I think new sleeping bags are on order with Santa this year!

Night one at Bernice via Evelyn Ridge / Lake and Hanging Basket Pass
(well... what I call it) Zippie da doo da over to Bernice via Gallison...
thought of someone here... hmm... who could that be... hmm...
(been awhile since touch Gallison... it has fish in it... so it still has a whole lotta blue stuffs)
wink

Day 2 up to Mt. Florence environs entire xcountry and then after battling the ridiculous winds
decide to change route and headed to find a bench marker and then to Babcock
with idea to climb the dome Sunday morning.
Started snowing about 6:30 pm... quit about 10:30 pm.
Barely got below freezing both nights.

Forecast Fri morn was 45% chance ... which equates to 100% this time of year... so knew was prob.
gonna get smacked. Luckily the wind was nil on Sunday...
Did I mention I absolutely hate high winds?

Anywho. Axe more if you like. Or if didn't answer u.
Have fun

Florence with Babcock Dome on the left:

Since I nose how much you want to get up Florence.. ok, nevermind.. I would
have gone all the way up if you could have actually seen the top from the saddle above
WL10541 (pix above) ... that was as far as I went when got smart and zipped back down.
I know really good way up now though... so we'll go that-a-way next time.
(route this time was xcountry from Bernice to top of Florence Falls and then zip over
to ridgeline to the SW) (a nice route.. but WL10541 looked nicer and quicker)

Anywho... Tanks fo Sharon ur pix Albutt OVD tongue sticking out smiley tongue sticking out smiley

Thanks, Chick-on! Those shots of Babcock and Emeric are brilliant. What a great weekend.

I guess experience is why you were there and I was here! I saw the weather forecast and pictured a full on Sierra winter storm in my mind.

I have a bloody job offer for this weekend threatening my trip to Granite Park. The devil on my shoulder says "take the job...money is good..." The angel is saying "the mountains are calling, the weather is great, money is over rated!"

Oh well, such is life...

Soaking wet and cold will put a hurt into you. So no... Did not get wet at all really.
I bring rain jacket and rain pants almost always...
(as I likes to sayz... "dis ain't my first dog and pony show" wink )
Seriously... I've seen hypothermia first hand... and I will not let myself go there.

Re: A few pix of the first snowfall (saw that coming)

Since you came through high, safe and dry I think it's alright to say that the picture of your tent is...both funny and concerning. I'm sure that the whole aspect is exaggerated by your shoveling. I'm only writing this because I was just hammered by rain during the same time frame, but up in the Trinity Alps, where the structural integrity of my single pole tent came into question. Everything turned out fine, but I'm going to be putting stronger guy lines on my tent for sure! (spectra cord is suddenly making me nervous.)

I admit to being a little klutzy. A lot klutzy. Hiking pole tents may be beyond my engineering capacity.

Great pics! couldn't agree more about hating high winds...!

Hegel,
The Mountain Laurel Designs SoloMid which is what I've been using
for a bit does incredible in the wind. Dunno if posted this pix b4...
but here it is out in da winter:

The previous night it got ridiculously windy... so much so I thought
that Bearpoof ... who was next to me in his tent was gonna get
blown off the mountain (he had to run into the woods at one pt.
and get some branches to help hold down his tent fly).

Anywho... it's a great little tarp thing-a-ding.

Re: A few pix of the first snowfall (saw that coming)

Chick-on: yep, the solo-mid would be my first choice in this type of tent, but I got a good deal on a used Hexamid solo and so went with that. It's a good tent but I have a few concerns about its single pole structural design. (Probably unfounded concerns as many other people give this tent good reviews in that regard. ) Also, I regret that the body doesn't drop low to the ground all the way around...but I've always been a tent person; I'm not used to tarp-like tents and so more experience may change may mind.

Sorry, no pics of my own, although my friends have sent some via e-mail...I don't blog or facebook, pretty old fashioned--books, anyone?--if I can figure out how to re-post photos I'll do that. Snow line was about 6500 ft.

Oh, and one usually reliable weather forecast was for "30% chance of rain friday night into saturday, clearing in the morning"....so that's 100% chance of rain, but I hoped for a mild rain, not the buckets that we got over most of 24 hours...

Seriously though... not nuff peeps look at guidebooks and whatnot...
Although I'd say the guidebooks are quite lacking in many instances
and a good ol' fashioned map trumps it.
Plus most of what I doooz nowadayz isn't in any guidebook.

Well obviously...

This isn't officially a backpacking site, but it's a site for all things Yosemite, including backpacking in Yosemite. And it's also a place to discuss all things going on in the Sierra Nevada too, including backpacking or hiking anywhere around the Sierra Nevada.

But you knew that, so I'm not sure why I'm restating it. (Probably for the benefit of others...) wink

Don't overthink and overanalyze things, especially things like where one should post or not. Do whatever makes you happy.

the egg shooting birdo got snowed on? ho ho ho, merry xmas!

That was certainly a surprising system that went through Cali. No one saw it coming, not even those meteorologists (big surprise). I might share some "faux toes" later, from Pano trail and Sentinel Dome (gentle winds). Didn't expect to see so much white on the peaks in Sept.

Rotten shame Tioga was closed until mid-afternoon. But even GP road had to be plowed. Yes, there was snow and ice - enough for them to break out the yellow trucks. Lots of white on trees and terrain. Looked much like springtime when the season is just opening.

Actually this guy (Howard) put a hint of it in his Weds. forecast and further bolstered the prediction in his Friday forecast. Scroll down from today's forecast til you hit his comments on Friday and his forecast last Weds. He gives pretty detailed weather discussions:

Thanx chick-on! Bootifull peakshurs! I haven't put on my 3D glasses in months! (Haven't been on for so long, I had to log in.)

Yeah Howard predicted the weather...and I could've too. Any time I have a craft show, be prepared for adverse weather in the vicinity. The poor audience (at Millpond Music Festival) had to sit in the wind drive sprinkles Saturday night. And one band was late trying to get here from the Bay area. But the snow is just a beautiful sight...

No domeys this year. New to me this year was Eagle Peak and Eagle Tower. Then just hiked up and down the Tuolumne River and took my nephew on a hike to Cathedral and Budd Lakes. He'd never been there.

Went up Dana on my birthday, then nuthin' in Yosemite since June. (Spent 21 nights...mostly in RV...in Yosemite the first 6 months of 2013.)

Get ready for another storm...my next show is Oct 4-5-6.

I'm ready.
Took Z Wifie to Eagle Towa last weekend. Gotta say... w/o the water it was
very anti-climatic... especially after 95% off trail with view for most of Z way to get there.
(bzw - z best way up and down is climb high) (i.e. going thru Eagle Peak Mdws blows)

Have fun
