If the partial federal governemnt shutdown enters day four, eastern California radio news director Stacey Powells will enter Yosemite National Park, whether it is open open or not.
Public television station KCET reports that Powells plans to organize an "Occupy Yosemite Moment" on Friday afternoon. The road through Tioga Pass leading into the park is open for travel-only purposes during the shutdown, but no stops are permitted. If they can get through the entry station, Powells will stage a sit-in at Tuolumne Meadows, in the eastern section of Yosemite.
"I am outraged at what the Federal Government is doing. Closing our National Parks is absurd and is huritng all of us here in the Eastern Sierra," Powells wrote in a letter the editor on sierrawave.net. "They cannot take away our access to our national parks which are on public lands. They can't use this as a bargaining chip. Isn't that against

I love the "no stopping" rule. That is hilarious. I was thinking how this would be the perfect time for a Clouds Rest/Half Dome hike even a Tenaya Canyon trek. For that matter, basejumpers should be taking this opportunity.
All you would need is someone willing to drop you off as they slowly roll pass the trailhead--they wouldn't even have to stop!
Maybe someone will go and hang a big banner from the top of Half Dome.

Politics aside, I think both sides could join for civil disobedience of the Occupy Yosemite. The liberals could bring a banner protesting Republican intransigence and Republicans could bring a banner protesting Obama's intransigence. Base Jumpers could be the entertainment. Extra parachutes for those on either side who are particularly unruly.

Kind of, but you certainly are not alone. The system is broken, but when the Republicans were in charge they upped the debt ceiling limit (the amount of money the US is allowed to borrow to meet EXISTING legal obligations) without any debate what so ever. Raising the debt limit does not increase the national debt. But now that a Democrat is president, they use that as a way to throw a wrench into the works.Quote

I can't speak for the Tea Party obstructionists. Their reasoning is beyond most of us. It only makes sense to the local constituencies that elected them, well, most of the time anyway. As for our politics in general, it's not much different than the back and forth one-liners traded in the House of Parliament or House of Commons (I forget which) where there is a lot of name calling and little accomplished. The primary difference is that our president does not participate in person on the floor like the prime Minister does.

Uh.... the Arch Rock Entrance Station is INSIDE the Park. To be outside the Park they'd have to go to "Parkline" just past the Yosemite View Lodge.
I won't be there. As an employe currently locked out, I think it's best to not attend. I'm not sure of the rules, but my job could be jeopardized.

Saw about a dozen at parkline driving in this morning. I too can't be a part of such gatherings but definitely honked going by to show my support! Party lines aside we all and our gateway communities just want to work and share our beautiful home with visitors. It's quite depressing to see this place so empty but the drive in today was smooth sailing for a Saturday! The wildlife are definitely enjoying it...

Simplistically, that makes great sense, and Ken's analogy is fine except soda and medical care are not in the same category. I know, let's all just pay for what we use. Some people are fortunate enough to have paid-for health care, either through an employer or a government job, or they are wealthy enough to pay for it on their own. Did all of them earn that wealth, or are some of them spoiled brats who inherited it or just use their parents money that they inherited, and so on. A guy who does something as useful as throwing a ball through a hoop can certainly pay for his own, but those with less important jobs like growing, planting or harvesting food don't deserve it. The guy who does nothing but shuffle money around all day and produces nothing of any use to anyone can afford his health care, but the guy who builds his house probably can't. A good part of the reason for this is the high cost, not because it really costs that much, but because of lawyers, lawsuits, pharmaceutical companies and their stockholders, and the fact that no one can be a 'country doctor' any more, it's too complicated.
Many of the better governments around the world do provide at least basic health services for their citizens, so it is not unreasonable for some to think that the US should do that. It may not be your opinion, but that's why people banded together for common interest form governments, to provide basics for citizens (which includes many things that even the most radical conservatives consider to be necessary).
The way the affordable health care system is set up, no one will face an economic burden they can't handle. Those who are already 'set', such as politicians, government employees, and those working for large corporations may resent it, or they may just be greedy and not want to contribute to anything that pools funds for the well-being of the population in general. Greed and political rhetoric is the main fact in what's happened now. This is just a means of providing some basic health care to those who can't afford it and do need it. I don't need it...haven't been to a doctor in 30 years, but I don't mind paying for it, because people should have the option of seeing a doctor if they need to, without having their home foreclosed on as a result. Don't worry, you can still drive your Mercedes to the country club where you discuss your stock options, your world won't end. Just tip the valet a little less.
This whole shutdown is a childish tantrum of the "haves" not wanting all those dirty, welfare-collecting hippie drug users who lie around all day drain all the money out of their bank accounts. But in reality it's just real working people who maybe were not born wealthy or didn't have rich parents, didn't win the lottery, were not able to be hired by a major corporation or the government, and who can't even afford to see a doctor because of the bloated nightmare the health care system has become.
