Re: Eastern Sierra fall leaf work after snowstorm

Worked fall leaves in the Eastern Sierra during and after the considerable October 9 snowstorm in the Sierra. Added the below feature story to my website. Given DSLR popularity, not many of us still lugging about view cameras in those areas though results can still be worth it. Includes eight 4x5 images plus 11 Canon G10 supporting pics. Text provides some insight into my photography strategies for fall leaf work that includes considerable hiking where few or no others go including token commentary on some gear issues working a view camera in that environment.

Are you having any trouble finding film and processing?

No trouble at the moment. Thanks to the way the Internet has made available a vast array of world products at the touch of a keyboard. But the last few years have seen local sources dry up and the range of film types and formats shrink.

B&H continues to be a solid mail order source for large format color sheet film and there are some others. In any case the increasing dominance of digital cameras has diminished film choices making film users increasingly anxious.

Many experienced view camera color sheet film users will continue to resist the advantages of making a full move to digital for subjects they want to print large because it is much less expensive if one already has a view camera system and has little technical complications that the constant digital camera world does. The top medium format digital systems that have equivalent resolution like the PhaseOne IQ180 are extremely expensive and the largest sensor DSLR's camera systems that still have less resolution than 4x5 are also expensive and without any movements unless one buys one of the expensive shift lenses. As long as such is the situation Fuji probably will have confidence in continuing to produce Velvia and Provia sheet film. However when the time comes when costs for 60 to 100 or such megapixel sensors significantly drops there is likely to be another paradigm shift.

Develepment choices are also much more limited today. I send all my film out to www.theslideprinter.com in Denver that has been doing a superb job since local labs closed their doors several years ago.

Beautiful image!!

I have just recently retired my Linhof Technickardan and color film altogether. I still shoot b&w 6x7 film and have it drum scanned. I appreciate your hard work and skill to capture these images. Thanks for sharing.
