Lots of snow on valley floor and still coming down. I guess it was lower than the 5,000 foot predicted!

Thanks for the update. My son is praying that Badger will be opened for skiing on President's Day weekend.

Is this weekend considered President's Day weekend, or the following? My school district has the entire week off, plus the 17th.

Ok, thanks. I guess not many people get both President's days anymore.

Depends on what kind of work you do. Anything that services the pubic, like stores, restaurants, hospitals will be opened.

Man, I kinda wish my trip was this weekend and not last weekend. We only saw flurries at Curry last weekend. Must be magical in the Valley during a heavy snow...

We have been there several times before, during and after a big snow storm has hit the Valley and it is incredible.

Don't worry, you didn't miss much. These storms are from Hawaii. I've haven't noticed in any snow accumulating on Yosemite Valley's floor from this current set of storms:

Saturday morning (2/8/14) at 10:00 AM:

and Sunday morning (today, 2/9/14) at 10:00 AM:

The snow level was way high for this system of storms.

I looked through the Caltrans web cams along 80 and 50 up around Tahoe on Sat night and it was raining on all but a few at the very top of Donner and oddly enough at lake level at north shore Tahoe. I think that Sunday the snow level went even higher.

Oh wow. I expected a dumping of snow there. Maybe the Tuolumne Rangers will have more to deal with...

No dumping of snow this time around -- it was raining as high as 7,000 today (mixed with wet snow). Pineapple Express is good for a long steady rain, but not so good for pretty snow down low. Overnight lows have been unusually high the last couple of nights, too.

Actually snow on the valley floor at 4,000 feet is uncommon. And when it does snow on the valley floor it is rarely ever more than a few inches deep that quickly melts off. One of the issues is the bottom of the valley is less cold than the same elevations in the Sierra elsewhere because there is considerable radiation off the immense granite canyon walls that act as a reservoir of stored heat. I learned that in order for snows to stick, the snow level needs to be down to at least near El Portal at 2500 feet. In any case, every few years we get a particularly cold period midwinter when the whole valley floor has a decent full cover of snow that lasts a week or so. Driving around the loop road gets interesting. Storm on this link put 18 inches in the valley:

That's only a recent phenomenon, due to, yes, global warming.

For the first 75 years of the park's existence, the winters were notably colder and the valley's floor was covered in snow for long stretches of time.

In the last 25 years, this has occurred with a lot less frequency. Note in the early years, cross-country skiing on the valley's floor was a popular pastime during Yosemite's winter months as were sleigh rides.

The 22 February storm of 2009 left a huge amount of snow on the Valley floor (skiing was great that trip, too). The one picture that I took (and over-posted) had good coverage on Half Dome, too. I am sure that Chick-on has a repository of Valley floor snow pictures to share.

Tank ewe!

"Yosemite in Winter" desserves a thread all to itself.

I was going to post some of Chickie's pix, but they were all too good to leave any out. I highly suggest viewing the links.
