All phone service to Tuolumne Meadows and White Wolf is out indefinitely due to a large rock slide in Indian Canyon. This includes all DNC and NPS land lines, both Tuolumne cell towers and all pay phones along the Tioga road. Cell service is generally available at the May Lake junction, and NPS is communicating within the Tuolumne community via Internet and radio.

We found this out the hard way after we arrived at camp. At 12:44 pm July 2, we were still within good cell data coverage, and had we been checking this website, would have known and coordinated differently with our friends who were coming up. Sigh. But it all worked out. Thanks Eeek - I hope your prompt posting helped others who were good about keeping an eye here!

Hmm. This makes that hike up Indian Canyon a little more exciting, doesn't it?

Any idea where the slide is, exactly?

Since it took out the telephone cables, I would assume that it happened on the eastern side of Indian Canyon. How high up, I don't have any idea.

No, the Indian Canyon Trail is high up on the west side of the canyon, far from anything that could fall from the east side where the cable is.

There are two Indian Canyon Trails. One was blazed by Indians. The other by the Phone Company.

I found more info here, including pics of some of the phone equipment and even the slide itself:

Indian Canyon looks steep enough that I'd expect any slides there to drop debris on the Valley Loop Trail. Does anyone know if this one did at all?
