Sonora, Calif., (Apr. 14, 2015)…The Forest Service announced today that most forest roads and trails, weather permitting, on the Stanislaus National Forest (STF) will open to public travel tomorrow. While some Forest roads are open year-round, due to weather and road conditions other roads and trails have seasonal road closures and are only open to the public from April 15 through December 15.

Visitors are cautioned to drive defensively when traveling through the forest and take extra care when visiting areas previously effected by fire. The Rim Fire and El Portal area still contain snags, as well as other possible hazards. Before going out onto the Forest, please be sure to reference the STF Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) and check for current closures, advisories. It is also advisable to check the California Department of Transportation’s web site for openings and closures of state maintained roads, such as Highway 4 and 108.

Traveling on wet or icy roads can cause natural resource damage and unsafe travel conditions. Seasonal road closures are designed to protect both the interests of public lands and of the public.

Contact your local Ranger District office for current information on roads and conditions before traveling on the Forest: the Stanislaus NF Supervisor’s Office at: 209-532-3671; Calaveras Ranger District (RD) at 209-795-1381; Groveland RD 209-962-7825; Mi-Wok RD at 209-586-3234 or Summit RD at 209-965-3434.
