All visitors, employees, and residents are invited to pick apples (and take them home) to help keep bears wild! This event will be held Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at Curry Village Apple Orchard from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. These ripe apples attract bears to developed areas and alter their natural diets. By removing the apples, bears will return to natural food sources found throughout the park and not become exposed to humans and their food.

Parking will not be allowed in the Curry Village Orchard Lot from Wednesday, August 5th from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Good cause! Anybody know which variety of apples they are and how they taste? Just curious.. The fact that they are Yosemite apples already makes them amazing I bet!

I don't know what kind they are and have never tasted them. However, I read somewhere that they are tart and Mother Curry used them to make pies.

They're going to be tart because they are always picked before they become ripe. If the Park Service waits until the apples are ripe, the bears would already be devouring them.

"The Curry Village Orchard and Lamon Orchard (near the Valley Stables) both were planted in the mid-1800s by James C. Lamon, the first permanent european-american settler in Yosemite Valley. Lamon purchased trees from two local nurseries, Marshall’s Nursery in Mariposa and Harris’ Nursery in Nipawassas, and included apple varieties such as Winesap, Watercore, Wood Apples, Gravenstein, Maiden Blush, Baldwin and New York Greening. Lamon chose commercially well-established varieties that were
late harvest and cold-hardy. Winesap and Baldwin varieties were among the most commonly sold varieties at
the time and could be harvested in the fall; the Baldwin variety can be harvested as late as October. Each
orchard covered approximately four acres and incorporated approximately 500 trees each spaced 20 feet
apart. The orchards were irrigated by surface water through ditches."

I think they meant the town of Nipinnawasee (which was located between Mariposa and Oakhurst).
