Years ago I was returning to the Bay Area from Mammoth when this same section of road was closed due to a wildfire.

The detour is 200 miles long, and heads out to Hawthorne, NV.

Shorter if you can handle some rough dirt roads.

Looks like a lot of smoke on the Sentinel Dome webcam.

Fire crews are responding to the Marina Fire, which is north of Lee Vining and west of Highway 395. The fire is approximately 200 acres in size and is burning in pinyon and brush. Highway 395 is closed in the fire area at this time. Numerous firefighters, several engines, and a dozer are on scene. Additional resources are en route, including helicopters and air tankers. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

We were in So. Lake Tahoe when the fire started after taking 395 just a few days earlier. Going home decided to take hwy 50 back to Sacramento and then the 99 back to So. Cal (a painful drive) instead of the longer detour back into Nevada.
On a side note, there was still quite a bit of snow on the north/east facing slopes between Mammoth and Lake Tahoe. Since it has been a few years for an almost average snow pack I guess I was surprised to see this much snow in the mountains
this late in June.

From Sacramento, why Hwy 99 instead of I-5 if you were heading all the way back to SoCal? Hwy 99 is indeed painful, and while I-5 is very boring and not scenic — for me at least — it's a far less stressful of a drive (and faster too).

and less bumpy too! Those sections near tulare where you cross under the bridges are alignment killers haha

Try 43 instead. Takes longer but I found it quite relaxing.

But then I might miss all of the wonderful "smells" along the 99 through the valley!
