By making his name on the big walls and going on to become
one of the better kayakers of his era, Robbins exhibited a
seemingly unquenchable thirst for adventure. Perhaps he drew
inspiration from another multi-talented athlete who went before
him.

Ted Williams was arguably the best baseball player/hitter to ever
play, and he served his country as a fighter pilot in WWll AND Korea.
Of course, Ted didn't stop there. He went on to become such a
skilled fly fisherman and deep sea fisherman, he was inducted into
the International Game Fish Association Hall of Fame.

Kind of ironic that Robbins worked against gravity on the walls and
used it to his advantage in the water.

Obviously a very inspirational person. There is a bunch of stuff including a video interview on the Modesto Bee site. (Royal lived in Modesto for many years.)

His autobiography "To Be Brave" is a worthy read. 3 volumes of the planned 5 have been published. Perhaps the other two will come out posthumously.
